Executive Summary of RWJ Evaluating Innovations in Nursing Education: Advancing Health Via the Deployment of Smart Mobile Technology • Project Model: Hospital U has been working with major health systems on deploying mobile technology for their clinical populations. A question that often arises is the measurement of clinical outcomes as result of this technology. This Robert Wood Johnson Grant would allow us to accomplish the following two objectives 1) Deploy an innovative model to help educate ALL nurses in the hospital system and 2) Conduct a research study comparing outcomes of nurses that had access and used mobile technology on a regular basis compared to those that did not. • Nurse Educators will Use Mobile Technology to Better Educate Large Populations.   The major trend we are seeing is the proliferation of smart mobile devices which have emerged on the hospital campus. Is there a way for the nursing education staff to leverage the availability of these devices, and is there a way to measure outcomes. We propose to provide 15 participating hospital/system with the following toolset to deploy and standardize the use of smart mobile technology. • Mobile Learning Manager (MLM) Platform-this software is designed to allow a single nurse educator to push out content to large learner populations. For example, staff must be trained on a new piece of medical equipment, the educator simply uploads the video to the MLM dashboard in a few seconds. Instantly, all nurses around the system will receive an e-mail that new content is available, they will open an “app” on their iPhone, iPad or Android device and be able to review the video. After they have reviewed, the MLM software will be able to track and report on learner’s usage. • Large library of just-in-time short nursing videos and 3rd party Apps by specialty. In addition to the hospital’s own content, we will provide the hospital with 1000+ nursing skill videos that they can also “push” out to their nursing populations when they need to provide just-in-time training. In addition, we will select a predetermined list of “hospital approved” apps that users can voluntarily select by specialty. • Lending Library of mobile devices-If funded, participating hospitals will receive a preconfigured “lending library” for those nurses without their own devices. Lending library will include preloaded and imaged laptop, multisync powercase (to charge and sync multiple devices) as well as 40 iPod Touch 4G devices. • Leveraging MLM technology for multiple learning populations: Even though this RWJ grant targets nursing specifically, the Mobile Learning Manager can also be used for any other learning populations in the healthcare system such as physician/resident, leadership development, allied health, ancillary, etc…It even has a dedicated Patient Education platform that will allow distribution of patient ed to literally every specialty, or individual physician. The administrator for each of these learning populations would have access to the system.

3. Executive Summary The Mobile U Learning Manager (MLM) will allow clinical educators to easily deliver in real-time quality learning experiences to their nursing populations through mobile devices. Although 2011 RWJ Grant targets nursing, hospital can user same technology for all its other populations (e.g., physicians, residents, leadership, ancillary-dedicated patient education platform) The objectives are to leverage mobile technology in hospitals in order to: • accelerate learning • performance support at the bedside • reduce costs • mobile EMR • enhance clinical competencies, • assist in recruitment and retention, • reduce errors, improve outcomes • add flexibility and • improve quality and job satisfaction • track and record user outcomes

Next Steps • RWJ Project Name: RWJ The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health through the Deployment of Smart Mobile Technology • Project Description.  Hospital U is accepting applications from 15 not  for profit health systems geographically dispersed throughout the U.S. We propose to provide these participating hospital/system with the following toolset to deploy and standardize the use of smart mobile technology. • What the grant covers. 1) Mobile Learning Manager platform to deliver your own clinical content to mobile devices-compatible with all Apple devices (i.e, iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) as well as all Android devices (phones and tablets) 2) Content-1000 clinical just-in-time videos as well as playlists of 3rd party apps 3) Lending library of mobile devices. In addition, funding will also cover implementation costs, as well as aggregate data collection and analysis. • Key Dates/Deliverables.November 16th Hospital U submits brief proposal December 5-Full proposal due • Initial project will be for a 12 month duration, and will be self-sustaining after initial grant period  is completed, • No obligation for health system. Hospital U submits application directly. If during the project duration hospital wants to cease participation, we will substitute their participation with another health system. • Hospital U consistently partners with a number of other private/public foundations. The Mobile Learning Manager technology as well as 3rd party content has already been funded. We would be using RWJ funds for the additional mobile lending library hardware, as well as data collection, analysis and technical support. In the event that our grant proposal is not accepted, we will still make the technology available to participating hospitals without the additional budgeted hardware and support. In addition, the hospital can of course apply for these funds independently-not part of this collaborative project. 6. Dedicated Mobile Learning Manager Input course description, time, location, and when courses are available. Hospital has either its own branding (above) or generic - and employees have unique, secure log-ins. When new content is uploaded to the MLM, user is alerted though e-mail Whenever a new course is available in the health system, courses are categorized by subject in the MLM. When you have mission critical documents to share with your workforce, user gets an automated e-mail alert that document has been uploaded, and documents are categorized. Video and audio content work the same way…uploaded onto MLM and users stream new content from their devices. RWJ Grant Covers Software & Hardware • Mobile Learning Manager (MLM)-their own devices • They download the custom app, and you distribute all pertinent content (key contacts, classes and courses, events, video, audio, documents, PowerPoints, web pages, etc…) • Administrators “push” just-in-time content by uploading content via our mobile learning manager software (above). • When new content is uploaded, device owner is notified via e-mail in real-time. ALL usage in recorded and tracked • Multiple Populations-In addition to nursing… Physician/Residents, Leadership Dev’t, Patient Education, • Lending Library-If they don’t have devices • Pack of 40 devices are preloaded with MLS, 3rd party apps and content • Charged, stored and synced with a dedicated syncing case and a laptop • Devices are numbered, barcoded, and protected with our peripherals

8. Deliver &Track Your Own Content + 3rd Party Apps • 1) Mobile U Learning Manager (MLM) will allow the health system to upload its own mission critical content-deliver to your population’s devices in real time • Nursing Orientation • Resident/physician tools • Policy and procedures • Health and safety • Rapid content creation/distribution (e.g., grand rounds) • Bedside decision support • Mobile electronic medical records • Leadership development • Patient Ed to all specialties • Will record and track all content usage-provide user reporting-acts as a “light” mobile LMS or can interface with your LMS • 2) In addition, the hospital will approve a series 3rd party medical apps (depending on clinical specialty-see graphic) and users will be able to be download to their respective devices
