  3. Start with misconceptions/rumors about your topic Ask a Somers High student who “JhumpaLahiri” is and he/she will probably say “Someone who jumps?” Wrong!

  4. Start with a startling fact/statistic from your research Did you know that $5 worth of gas won’t even get you from Vision Boulevard to Dunkin Donuts?

  5. Start with strong imagery/details that relate to your topic A collared shirt (not tucked in), a thoughtful chuckle, eyes wide open in observation, tan workbootswith shoelaces untied—Langston Hughes was young man on a mission.

  6. Start with a controversial/provocative quotation “The government doesn’t want us to be happy,” Rohan Bartleby said as we sat down for a quick interview.

  7. The “anti”-hook If you are the kind of person who likes gossip, meaningless drivel, superficial possessions, and Tom Brady’s Muggs, then Richard Perkins isn’t a guy you should meet.

  8. Activity • Write a hook using at least three of the strategies for the following thesis: • Oftentimes in life and in literature, when a majority educates a minority, cultural expression is suppressed, resulting in minority students unable to fully connect with either cultural community.
