  1. History Essays It is not enough to simply know history. You have to be able to know it well enough to use it to make an argument. If you cannot figure out the focus of the question, no amount of historical knowledge will help

  2. Basic Essay Structure Introduction – Relevant background info - Thesis statement Body Paragraphs – Topic Sentence - Specific facts (evidence) - Analysis (commentary) Conclusion – Summarize main points - Re-phrase thesis statement

  3. Thesis Statements must: Fully address the prompt Make an argument And it should: 3) Provide categories to be addressed Answer how or why

  4. Other Essay tips • Dates: Try to include info from the entire time period • Do not include info from outside that time period • Use specific information (concrete details) • Write all essays in past tense only • Use info in chronological order

  5. Four Pillars of the DBQ 1) Thesis that does more than restate the prompt 2) Include relevant outside info 3) Use proper chronology 4) Use more than half the documents to support your arguments

  6. DBQs Treat this as a Document Supported Question Make sure to cover all aspects of the question Do not repeat or simply paraphrase the prompt DBQs must include outside information Do not simply use general statements (“there were lots of social changes in the US”)

  7. Other DBQ tips Never start a sentence with “Document B says,” instead refer to what the source is or who wrote it Do not add (Doc. B) to the end of a sentence with only a vague connection to the document ex. “There were several economic factors that led to unrest and social tension. (Doc D)” Do not group documents (Doc C, D, F) Avoid quotes because that doesn’t require analysis that shows an understanding of the text
