  2. reduce greenhouse gas emissions reduce our contribution to changes in climate addressing the causes ensure our community will be resilient prepare for projected future impacts addressing the consequences Rutland Water Partnership Action Plan2009 - 2012 Environmental Quality EQ 5: • actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide, by the adoption of energy saving practices and other relevant measures Environmental Quality EQ 6: • assessment of potential risks and opportunities to the Rutland Water area resulting from climate change • implement measures to reduce priority risks and pursue opportunities

  3. Developing a Plan for Rutland Rutland County Council A Local Climate Impacts Profile (Phase 1) The Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change Rutland County Council Carbon Management Programme Rutland County Council 7th July 2008 – 26th September 2008 By Rebecca Hart Climate Change Action Plan: June 2009 Carbon Management Plan: June 2009 Environmental Quality EQ 6 Environmental Quality EQ 5 Working on Energy Saving Trust One to One Programme 2009-11

  5. Upgrading Lighting energy efficient lights with motion & infrared sensors How much waste you produce? Promote Reducing, Re-using, Recycling & consider composting Monitor your energy use Installing automatic meters or read meters regularly Buy & use products made from renewable resources or recycled materials and which can be re-used, recycled or composted EQ 5: Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions RWP: Visitor / activity centre, facilities & offices

  6. Install waterless urinals & dual flush toilets reducing water usage Energy saving design in new builds Reduce your thermostat 1oC & install point-of-use water heaters reducing fuel used Loft insulation, heating pipe insulation & draught excluders to reduce heating bills EQ 5: Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions RWP: Visitor / activity centre, facilities & offices

  7. Use products made from… • Time switches • Switch off • LED lamps wood from sustainable forestry recycled materials Minimise use of pesticides, herbicides & fungicides Workplace Travel Plan How do visitors & staff get to & from Rutland Water? EQ 5: Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions RWP: Outdoor areas of Nature Reserve:

Resident awareness stands since 2008 Sustainable Schools Project promoting energy saving Supporting action by community groups Energy saving information for businesses on our website, event & links to support Energy Saving Trust One-to-One Programme EQ 5: Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions RWP: Supporting & participating in RCC initiatives: RCC leading action to reduce Rutland’s greenhouse gas emissions:

  9. The Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change Rutland County Council Likelihood of Occurrence Rutland County Council A Local Climate Impacts Profile (Phase 1) 7th July 2008 – 26th September 2008 By Rebecca Hart Climate Change Action Plan: June 2009 EQ 6: Planning for risks & opportunities • Local Climate Impacts Profile (LCLIP) for Rutland County Council (2008): impacts of past extreme weather on services NI 188 Level 1 Achievements (2008/09): NI 188 Level 2 Achievements (2009/10): • Service risk assessments of future climate change impacts • Identifying ways to reduce risks & promote opportunities Including work with LSP: • LCLIP for LSP Partners: past extreme weather impacts & adaptation • LSP Objectives Risk Assessment: LSP Theme Groups to review • LSP Workshop (10th Feb 2010): background and tools to complete risk assessments of own organisations LAA2 Target: Level 2 - identified risks & start to implement adaptive responses

  10. disruption by restricting access health issues, infectious disease, food poisoning telephone line & IT system disruption water supply contamination telephone disruption, reduced staffing higher risk of illness & accidents buildings damage, transport network disruption, health risks from uncomfortable working/living condition EQ 6: Planning for risks & opportunities Current & Short-term future (within next 30 years): Key Council Services Risks: Majority currently coping Longer-term Future Climate Change (up to 2100):

  11. Services which maintain or manage buildings & infrastructure • to consider climate change within planning, strategies & development frameworks Services which have influence over decisions which will be in place for the long term: • to consider, research & incorporate climate • change within current operations & plans Start me now! Services able to adjust rapidly to changes in climate: • regularly review risks & amend service delivery plans EQ 6: Planning for risks & opportunities Preparing for significant potential impacts in the future:

  12. damage to buildings, historical sites & local landscape, particularly where inadequate building maintenance ↑ road accidents due to ice & reduced visibility hotter indoor temperatures ↑ energy costs funding diverted from other projects ↑sun burn, skin cancer & cataracts EQ 6: Planning for risks & opportunities Key LSP Risks: • RWP: Towards an Adaptation Action Plan for Rutland: • Risk assessment of Rutland Water Nature Reserve • Adaptive measures workshops in Adaptation Week (Oct 2010) • Development of Adaptation Action Plan for Rutland during 2010/11
