  2. Percentages

  3. Public and uniformed services • What percentages are used in the uniformed services?

  4. Percentages – what are they • To think of it as money...... • 10% is 10p in the pound (100p) • 20% is 20p in the pound • Percent means out of 100

  5. How to calculate a percent of an amount • Divide the amount by 100 and multiply it by the percent you are looking for. • So to find 10% of some thing divide the amount by 100 to find 1% and multiply it by 10. • So to find 25% of something divide it by 100 and multiply it by 25

  6. Some for you to try • 10% of £50 • 25% of 100km • 40% of $90 • 65% of 150

  7. Making a percentage • A switchboard takes 10 calls for an ambulance and 30 for the fire brigade, what percentage of calls are for ambulances? • How do we do it? • How many things (in this case phone calls) altogether? • 10 + 30 = 40, then divide the number of the thing we are after by the total number and multiply by 100 • So.....10 ÷ 40 × 100 = 25%

  8. Some for you to try • 60 ambulances do not make it to the patient within 7 minutes, 240 do, what percentage make it on time? • 10 police cars, 20 riot vans and 20 mounted police are at a football match, what percentage are cars? • 80 officers are combat trained and 40 are not, what percentage are combat trained?

  9. Fractions decimals and percentages • ¼ is 1 ÷ 4 = 0.25 • Didn’t we just say, to find a percent, it’s the bit we have/need, divided by the total and multiply by 100? • So ¼ is 1 ÷ 4 = 0.25 then 0.25 × 100 = 25% • So ½ is 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5 then 0.5 × 100 = 50%

  10. Class practice - wordier • Tammy is going on holiday and has to pay a 20% deposit, her holiday costs £1500, how much would she need to pay? • £1500 ÷ 100 = £15 • £15 × 20 = £300 • Tammy would need to pay a £300 deposit

  11. Your turn…. • Simon is calculating how much he can save towards his wedding. He believes he can save 15% of his weekly wage of £230. How much can he save per week? How much is that in a year?

  12. ….and more…. • Sophie decides that she needs a new work uniform, Uniforms4u offer the uniform at £80 but have a 30% off, Work-garbs have the uniform at £110 with a half price sale on. Which is cheapest? • Jenni needs a new laptop and is told she needs one which is at least 30% faster than her current laptop which runs at 1000Mhz. What is the minimum speed she needs?
