  1. Biology 101 Unit 3A Day two: Protein Synthesis

  2. Journal: Tues 9/24 • Compare and Contrast DNA and RNA.

  3. Getting Started: Tues 9/24 • Make sure you turn in your HW: Either the DNA Gizmo OR the DNA/Replication POGIL WS • DNA Replication Enzymes?

  4. Today’s topic • Protein Synthesis: • STEP 1: Transcription

  5. RNA Brief Review –what are the 3 types? Messenger RNA (mRNA) carries protein code from nucleus to ribosome Transfer RNA (tRNA) brings required amino acids to ribosome Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) puts the code together to make the correct protein

  6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsofH466lqk TRANSCRIPTION: Making RNA from a DNA template

  7. What is transcription? • Synthesis of RNA from DNA- occurs in the nucleus Step 1: RNA polymerase binds to promoter (starts) Step 2: RNA polymerase unwinds the double-stranded DNA and begins assembling RNA nucleotides Step 3: Release the RNA transcript

  8. Getting Started: Wed 9/25 • Review of Transcription • Complete the sequences on the board; what would the corresponding RNA strand be?

  9. What is translation? • Sequence of codons (3 bases) in mRNA is translated into amino acid sequence- happens in cytoplasm • mRNA goes to ribosome and “drops off the code” • Ribosome calls for tRNA’s to pick up the code and then go get the right amino acid and bring it back to ribosome (tRNA has the “anticodon” on its end • At the end: 3 codons that do not code for amino acid, but signal termination- so ribosome knows when to stop making protein • rRNA is embedded in ribosome and it puts all the amino acids together with peptide bonds

  10. Coding for an Amino Acid:

  11. Putting it all together: • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJxobgkPEAo • Transcription & Translation: Protein Synthesis

  12. Todays Activities: • SNORK Genetics Activity • Assembling a Protein Molecule Packet • HW: Outlining Steps in Protein Synthesis
