  2. #1. What is Major Depression? • Most people feel sad or low at some point in life. But major depression is usually a depressed mood most of the day, particularly in the morning.

  3. #2. Symptoms • Fatigue • Sudden loss/gain of weight. • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt almost every day • Recurring thoughts of death or suicide • Insomnia or hypersomnia ( no sleep or excessive sleeping)

  4. #3. Signs of Depression • Men • Anger • Violent behavior • Substance abuse • Thoughts of suicide • Women • thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts • Excessive crying • Loss of interest in daily activities • Sadness all the time • Weight loss/gain

  5. #4. Common drugs used for treatment • Abilify • Celexa • Cymbalta • Exercise • Fish Oil • Lexapro • Pristiq • Prozac • Wellbutrin • Xanax • Zoloft

  6. #5. Treatments • Psychotherapy- also known as “talk therapy”. This is when you go to a therapist daily to talk about your problems. Benefits • It can help reduce stress in your life. • It can give you a new perspective on problems with family, friends, or co-workers. • It can make it easier to stick to your treatment. • You can use it to learn how to cope with side effects from depression medication. • You learn ways to talk to other people about your condition. • It helps catch early signs that your depression is getting worse

  7. #6. Treatments (cont.) • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)-This is when electrodes are put on a patient's scalp and a finely controlled electric current is applied. The current causes a brief seizure in the brain. ECT is one of the fastest ways to relieve symptoms in severely depressed or suicidal patients. It's also very effective for patients who suffer from mania or other mental illnesses. Benefits • when treating bipolar disorder • when treating mania • when treating patients who have a severe risk of suicide

  9. #9. How you can You Prevent it? • Eat properly. • exercise. • taking time out for fun and relaxation, don’t overwork, and saving time to do things you enjoy may work together to prevent a depressed mood.

  10. #10.Who does it affect? • ANYONE! • Major depression affects adults, teens, children, and old people. • Overall, between 20% and 25% may suffer an episode of major depression at some point during their lifetime. • YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
