Interactive Activity #1:Ice Breaker: Random Interview(5 minutes) Directions: • Stand beside your chair • On the count of 3 turn for 5 seconds and stop • Make eye contact with an individual and begin the interview Questions: • Who was your favorite teacher and why? • What’s your worst school/classroom memory and why? • What’s your favorite school/classroom memory and why? • Report to Community

Goals and Outcomes • Participants will understand and be able to apply the elements of positive school culture strategies. • Participants will learn the research-based dimensions of school culture associated with higher levels of student achievement. • Participants bring common values to life to support their school community. • Participants will learn how to establish and maintain a positive school climate and culture.

  5. Vocabulary • Beliefs- assumptions and convictions that are held to be true in support of the school community. • Values- core beliefs that guide and motivate actions and attitudes within a school. • Norms- consistent behaviors that provide a general set of expectations that work to define the overall culture and climate. • Expectations- strong beliefs of behaviors and actions to occur within a school. • Goals- future expected outcomes of a school.

  8. The Research on School Culture Since the mid 1970’s, education researchers have compiled various and impressive evidence on the subject of school culture. Healthy and sound school cultures correlate strongly with increased student achievement and motivation, as well with teacher productivity and satisfaction.

  9. Layers of Positive School Culture • Surface (Layer 1)- Culture relates to such things as physical settings, language and stories. • Deeper (Layer 2)-Culture refers to the ceremonies/customs and symbols (such as uniforms and logos) as well as the accepted standards of behavior (rules and procedures). • Deepest (Layer 3)- Culture refers to such things as the fundamental assumptions and core values of both individuals and the organization. Goals and expectations are discussed daily.

  10. Interactive Activity #2:Think, Pair, Share (5 minutes) 1. Define school climate and school culture. 2. Compare and Contrast school climate and school culture.

  11. School Climate / School Culture School Climate The communication of a school’s norms, beliefs, and values through various behaviors and interactions with the primary focus being on students. It is driven by daily interactions of the the school community. School Culture Norms developed over timebased on shared attitudes, values, beliefs, expectations, relationships and traditions of a school that cause it to function or react as it does.

Positive Culture vs. Toxic Culture Positive Culture Toxic Culture Widely shared sense of purpose Norms of continuous learning and improvement Collaborative relationships Opportunities for reflection, inquiry, and share of best practices Lack of clear sense of purpose Norms that reinforce inertia or resistance to change Collaboration restricted Staff “cliques” that work against building relationships

How to Become a Positive Player on the School Team • Foster a climate of commitment to staff and student learning • Build positive relationships through collaborative activities • Recognize, support , and actively participate in quality professional development • Address negativity directly, replacing negative stories with positive examples • Maintain professional loyalty to your school community • Align your goals to that of your school

Interactive Activity #6:Culture of Popular Organizations (10 minutes) In cooperative groups, please select one of the following organizations and discuss their mission, core values, motto, expectations, uniform, logo etc.: • Wal-Mart • All State Insurance Company • United States Armed Forces • Burger King • Home Depot • Target • Starbucks • UPS
