  1. Experiment four:Applications of Flocculant in Sewage Treatment Kang Wanli 2011.3

  2. One. Experimental purposes • 1.To observe the water purifying phenomenon of flocculant(coagulant and coagulant aid),and to understand the mechanism and  character of use of flocculant in sewage treatment. • 2.To master one method of searching the optimum  mass concentration of flocculant.

  3. Two. Experimental principles Flocculant includes Function of coagulant—neutralization of solid particle’s surfaceelectric charge Functions of coagulant aid— bridging、curling Both of coagulant and coagulant aid have a optimum applied concentration.

  4. Equipments and chemicals • 1.Instruments • Electronic balance(precision 0.0001g)、10ml stopple calibration test tube、60ml drop bottle、100ml beaker、724 type spectrophotometer、electric mixer. • 2.Chemicals and materials • Ferric chloride、Polyacrylamide、sewage.

  5. Four.Experimental procedures: Observe the water purifying phenomenon of flocculant and the effects by visual colorimetry during the procedure, then record the phenomenon and data in a table. 1.Use coagulant singlely: Shake the sewage evenly, then add 10ml of sewage to 6 test tubes separately, then add 4% FeCl3 1d、2d、4d、8d、16d、32d successively. Keep still for 10 minutes after shaking evenly, then observe and record the phenomenon. Find out the optimum applied concentration of coagulant under experimental conditions.

  6. 2.Use coagulant aid singlely:Shake the sewage evenly, then add 10ml of sewage to 6 test tubes separately. Then add 5×10-5 HPAM 1d、2d,5×10-4 HPAM 4d、8d,1×10-2 HPAM 16d、32d to 6 test tubes separately. Keep still for 10 minutes after shaking evenly, then observe and record the phenomenon.find out the optimum applied concentration of coagulant under experimental conditions.

  7. 3.Use coagulant and coagulant aid together:Shake the sewage evenly, then add 10ml of sewage to 6 test tubes separately, then add 4% FeCl3 1d、2d、4d、8d、16d、32d successively. Shake them evenly, then add 1d 5×10-4 HPAM to each one and shake them evenly. Keep still for 10 minutes, then observe and record the phenomenon. Find out the optimum applied concentration of coagulant under experimental conditions.

  8. Five.Experimental results processing Figure out the required optimum mass concentration of coagulant and coagulant aid in sewage purification(representing in mg/L). (Convert the optimum drop number into mg/L,and the mass of each drop of the solutions is:4% FeCl3 0.06g, 5×10-5 HPAM 0.06g, 5×10-4 HPAM 0.07g , 1×10-2 HPAM 0.08g) 1.Explain the mechanisms of coagulant and coagulant aid separately. 2.Why both of coagulant and coagulant aid have a optimun applied concentration? 3.If the suspended substance in water is small oil drops rather than solid particles, please think about the question that whether the  flocculant in the experiment still has the function of water purification?
