  1. Narrative Essay Glass Castle Day 7

  2. Do Now: Brainstorm a list of important events, memories, moments in your life. These can be anything and you do not have to share them with anyone. Aim for at least 10 people/events/memories. Learning Target: 1) Create sensory details using the “zoom in” method. 2) Make connections to the Glass Castle.

  3. Audacious/Audacity “Our most spectacular fight, and our most audacious tactical victory—the Battle of Little Hobart Street—took place against Ernie Goad and his friends when I was ten and Brian was nine,” (Walls).

  4. Audacious/ Audacity • willingness to take bold risks. • Rude, disrespectful behavior.

  5. Rough Draft Due • A day Monday • B day Tuesday • Late rough drafts will receive a zero • Complete rough drafts will receive an automatic 100. FINAL DRAFTS DUE Friday 11/16

  6. When to Zoom In • There are certain moments in our stories when the reader needs to really experience the moment. • This may happen at times of tension or conflict (ex. Your characters are fighting) • It may happen at times of transformation (ex. You characters have solved a problem or learned something about themselves).

  7. Draft I ran away from home the day I made my brother cry. We were walking home from school when I saw a yard sign advertising the local elections. I pulled the sign out of the ground and tore it in half just as I had seen the older boys do. Just then, I heard a garage door open. “Run!” I yelled to my brother, but he wouldn’t move. I hit him with my backpack and left him crying on the sidewalk as I ran to the woods to hide.

  8. Zoom In My brother and I were walking up the path from school where fat bumble bees swarmed around the chain link fence. Turning the cornerI saw a yard sign advertising the local elections staked into the grass. It was early October and the sun was still warm. Bright leaves decorated the trees and the hum of lawnmowers could be heard over the traffic. “Hold up,” I said to Jonathon, walking over to the sign and looking over my should to be sure we were alone.

  9. Zoom Way In My brother and I were walking up the crackedpath from school where fat bumble bees swarmed around the rusted, chain link fence. Turning the corner I saw a red, white and blueyard sign advertising the local elections staked into the wet grass. It was early October and the sun was still warm. Bright leaves decorated the trees and the hum of lawnmowers could be heard over the occasionaltraffic. “Hold up,” I said to Jonathon, as I walkedover to the sign, looking over my should to be sure we were alone. Tentatively, I pulled the sign out of the ground and tore it in half just as I had seen the older boys do. Just then, I heard a garage door creak open. Moving quickly across his driveway, an old man with salt and pepper hair combed neatly across his head raised his fist in the air yelling at us to move away.

  10. “Run!” I yelled to my brother, but he wouldn’t move. It was as though he was stuck to the sidewalk or sinking in quicksand. Swinging my backpack over my head, I hit him with it. “Run!” I yelled but again he didn’t budge. Big, fat tears rolled down his cheek and onto the bright green monster truck t-shirt he wore.I dropped my backpack and ran to the woods, the rhythm of my heart pounding in my chest felt like it was about to explode. I had abandoned my brother, and worse; I had left him to drag my backpack with the social studies book that seemed to weigh 20 pounds inside.
