  5. Volute Krater • 480-500 BC • Achilles fighting Hector on one side, Achilles fighting Memnon on the other

  6. The scenes on the volute-krater are confined to a narrow, frieze-like band that encircles the lower element of the neck. • The figure circled is believed to be Achilles and we can see dynamic movement and motion lines • Variety of viewpoints used (profile, ¾, frontal).

  7. There is a High level of detail seen on the figure of Achilles. The Figure is in profile The slight twist in the torso is realistic which is uncommon for the figures we have seen in all previous vases.

  8. The body of the vase is left black • This immediately draws the eyes to the focal point of the vase. • Triangular divisions • Better anatomical proportion and detail.

  9. Woody • “ He has portrayed intense drama”

  10. Berlin Amphora

  11. Amphora • Pattern around the Neck • Not the standard Lotus Chain • The body depicts a Satyr and Hermes. • Hermes strides to the right swinging his arms. He holds a large kantharos and a kerykeion (herald's wand) • He is dressed in a short tunic and chlamys, and wears a winged cap and winged boots. • A satyr stands in front of him facing right, his head turned to the left. He is holding a barbiton (lyre) in one arm, his fingers splayed across the strings. • In his other hand, held out behind him, he holds the end of a string attached to the lyre.
