  2. My name is Haley. I live on a farm. In the spring, a lot of the animals give birth to babies. I help my dad and mom count the new babies. We use fractions on our farm to compare how many animals we had originally to how many animals we have after spring births and how many we sell and have left after some are sold.

  4. In the spring, the cows give birth to calves. This spring, three cows gave birth to one calf each, but one cow gave birth to two calves. Will you help me count the total number of calves? There are 5 calves total. 2 4 1 5 3

The bottom of a fraction is called the denominator. Since there are 4 cows total, they all belong in the denominator.

If we subtract 6 from 8 the answer gives us the number of colts dad is planning to keep. 8 – 6 = 2 We write this fraction 2/8 or two-eighths. Sold

  26. If 2/23 is the fraction of pigs out of the total number of pigs and piglets, how many piglets did the pigs have all together this spring? The denominator of the fraction is 23 and represents the total number of pigs and piglets. If there are two pigs represented by the numerator 2, then 23 subtract 2 equals the total number of piglets. 1 2

So we group the piglets into groups of 4.

Mother Cat There are 7 kittens. Of the 7 kittens, 1 is brown. We write this fraction 1/7 or one-seventh. What fraction of the litter are brown?

  42. There are 7 kittens in the litter. There is 1 mother cat. If we add the mother cat and the litter of kittens. How many cats and kittens do we now have? 1 cat + 7 kittens = 8 total What fraction of the total is a mother cat? What fraction of the total are kittens? Of the total 8, 7 are kittens. We write this fraction 7/8 or seven-eighths. Of the total 8 cat and kittens, 1 is a mother cat. We write this fraction 1/8 or one-eighth.

  45. When the kittens reach 6 weeks old, I plan to give all the kittens (1 litter) away. What fraction of the kittens am I giving away? There are 7 kittens total. If I give all the kittens away, I am giving 7 of the 7 away. We write this fraction 7/7, seven-sevenths, or 1 whole litter.

  46. As with cats and kittens, dogs giving birth to puppies are considered a litter also. How many puppies are in the farm dog’s litter? There are 5 puppies in her litter.

  47. If we add the mother dog and the litter of puppies, How many do we have in total? There are 6 all together. What fraction of the total are puppies? What fraction of the total is a mother dog? Of the total 6 dog and puppies, 5 are puppies. As a fraction, we write, 5/6 or five-sixths. Of the total 6, 1 is a mother dog. As a fraction, we write 1/6 or one-sixth.

  48. When the puppies reach 6 weeks old, I plan to give 4 of the puppies away. If I give away 4 puppies, what fraction of the puppies am I going to keep? There are 5 all together. If I give away 4, I am keeping 1 puppy. The 1 puppy written as a fraction is 1/5 or one-fifth of the puppies.

  49. When the puppies reach 6 weeks old, I plan to give 4 of the puppies away. If I give away 4 puppies, what fraction of the puppies am I going to keep? 1 = If I give away 4, I am keeping 1 puppy. We can rearrange the puppies to look like the fraction 1/5. 5
