  1. Alumni Association scholarships The Alumni Association’s Dollars for Scholars program will award a total of $67,000 to 57 graduates of the Class of 2009. The Association is producing a CD, featuring Dr. Jeannie Favela, Mariachi Los Diablitos and Mariachi del Desierto, as a scholarship fund-raiser. The premier performance will be at the Foundation event April 18.

  2. Wal-Mart award of $25,000 to UA’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) benefits students of Desert View Thank you, Wal-Mart!

  3. LULAC honors Dr. Isquierdo Superintendent Dr. Manuel Isquierdo will receive the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) National Presidential Citation Award for Community Service at the LULAC Educational Banquet on Wednesday, April 1, 2009. He is being honored by LULAC on a billboard just north of Park and Drexel.

  4. Tucson Festival of Books Desert View freshman Aria Bronte was a winner in the Festival of Books Young Writer’s Competition. Only five stories were selected from 227 entries in the high school category. Aria’s teacher for Freshman Honors English is Jackie Gale. The SUSD booth at the Festival of Books featured the Community Stories Project exhibit. SUSD received special distinction as a member of the Literacy for Life Coalition. Becky Ridge represents the district in the Coalition.

  5. Honors for Blue Devil wrestlers, coach Arizona Daily Star Sunnyside High School’s Bobby De Berry and Kory DeBerry were named 2009 Tucson Citizen Wrestling Coach and Wrestler of the Year. Blue Devil Anthony Pike was named Wrestler of the Year by the Arizona Daily Star. Tucson Citizen

  6. Sierra eighth-graders take action Sierra eighth-graders hosted a panel of city officials as part of their study of gangs and violence through data analysis and statistics provided by Ward 5 and the Tucson Police Department. Teacher Suzanne Kaplan led coordination of the project.

  7. Latino Perspectives magazine spotlight on Jaramillos Governing Board Member and Chief Master Sgt. Robert Jaramillo and daughters, Staff Sgt. Erika and Staff Sgt.   8. More than 100 students from Desert View and Lauffer participated in Holocaust Remembrance event March 17 at Air National Guard Holocaust survivors tell students, ‘Never forget’

  9. Sunnyside High student Nicole Esquivel has been named recipient of the Arizona Legislators – Latino Caucus Cesar Chavez Award. Nicole will receive her award from Governor Jan Brewer and the Latino Caucus on March 31. Cesar Chavez Award
