VOCABULARY • Satrapy- different providences. • Satrap- governor or “protector” of the kingdom. • Monarchy- government ruled by a king or a queen. • Exalted- raised or elevated in reank of character. • Cavalry- military force, mostly on horseback. • Infantry- branch of an army made up of units trained to fight on foot. • Zend Avesta- the sacred book of Zoroastrianism.

  3. Important people • Nebuchadnezzar the 2nd- (NEH-byuh-kuhd-NEH-zuhr) king of the Assyrian Empire until its downfall. He made Babylonia the leading state in western Asia. • Cyrus-creator of a powerful Persian army. Ruled 559-530 b.c. Nicknamed Cyrus “The Great” • Assyrians-prophet of the “true religion” • Persians- Indo-European people who lived in southwestern Iran. • Darius- ruled 521-486 b.c. made a new Persian province in western India • Immortals- the special group of soldiers whose numbers were never allowed to dip below 10,000.
