There are 3 stages to becoming a geisha. • Takes about five and a half years. • Full-fledged geishas are called “Geiko.” Apprentice geisha are called Maiko (まいこ) , 舞(mai) meaning “dancing” and 子(ko) as the meaning of “child” A trainee is referred to as han’gyoku [はん‘ぎょく(半玉)] Other wise know as a “half-jewel” To become a Maiko/Geisha the han’gyoku would have to pass a dance performance
