Major Symptoms • Persistent eating of nonnutritive substances for a period of at least one month • Does not meet the criteria for either having autism, schizophrenia, or Kleine-Levin syndrome • The eating behavior is not culturally sanctioned • If the eating behavior occurs exclusively during the course of another mental disorder (e.g., intellectual disability, pervasive developmental disorder, schizophrenia), it is sufficiently severe to warrant independent clinical attention

  3. Major Causes • Mineral deficiency (such as iron) • Deficiency of minerals causes the body to crave missing nutrients • Obsessive Compulsive tendencies

  4. Percentage of Population • Typically around 8% • Occasionally affects pregnant women

  5. Treatment Methods • Treatment should first address any missing nutrients or other medical problem • Behavioral or environmental changes • Changes in diet • Positive reinforcement for eating normal foods

  6. Remember kids, eat your vegetables, not miscellaneous objects!
