1. Answering question 2 • Question two will ask you to look at one source and comment on why it presents itself in such a way. • Essentially it is looking for background knowledge and an analysis of the sources NOP – especially the P – purpose.

4. Target: AO1/AO3 Making a judgment about evidence related to own knowledge. Level 1 Developed statements making inferences from the source OR using relevant own knowledge, e.g. Hoover would want to portray the 1920’s as a successful decade (1-2) Level 2 Developed statements making inferences from the source AND using relevant own knowledge, e.g. Hoover was a Republican, as was the current President, he would want to portray Republican government as very successful to persuade voters that he would continue this success. (3-5) Level 3 Developed explanation using the source as evidence supported by selected own knowledge. Hoover’s speech is describing republican policies in a very positive light, focusing on the successes of the 1920’s such as the overall impressive economic growth during the period and reduction in overall poverty. He chooses not to mention the possible downsides of the 20’s such as increased crime, growing debt and the exclusion of some part of society from the boom such as black people & farmers. He does this in order to associate himself with the policies of the 20’s followed by Presidents Harding and Coolidge and the positive progress made and therefore persuade Americans to vote for him.
