  1. Anne Hathaway by Carol Ann Duffy By Suman, Shagofta, Corey, Farhan and Mujjadud.

  2. What is the poem about? • The poem is about a women called Anne Hathaway who was married to the playwright William Shakespeare. When her husband died, in his will he left his wife his second best bed. Ann lived for a further seven years after her husband died. In this poem Duffy creates the persona of Anne Hathaway and portrays her remembering having a loving, sexual relationship with him and how she misses his love.

  3. Who is the speaker? The speaker is Anne Hathaway because she is talking about her relationship with her husband, Shakespeare. The readers are the witnesses to their love. We know how she is feeling because of her strong description describing her love and lovelife.

  4. How does language help you to understand the poem? • Language used in the poem helps us understand the poem by using: • Rhyme • Imagery • Senses • Alliteration • Metaphors

  5. How else does language help you to understand the poem? ( can you include close textual analysis?) • The use of alliteration helps us to remember the emotions and feelings of the narrator, for example in the phrase ‘living, laughing love’. The alliteration of ‘l’ slows the reader down and helps give the phrase a warm and loving tone. It also emphasises the word ‘living’ which reminds us how alive the memory of Shakespeare is in her mind.

  6. Alternative interpretation ‘living, laughing love’ This could also mean that she cannot forget the past moments she spent with her husband, and all the memories which will always be with her.

  7. What poem does this compare with? • This poem compares well with ‘My last duchess’ this is because the theme is about love and death the same as ‘Anne Hathaway’.

  8. Other poems this compares with. This poem ‘Ann Hathaway’ can be linked with the poem ‘My first sonne’ because they are both linked with the idea of death of a loved one who they cherished dearly.

  9. Why this poem is successful. This poem is successful because it captures the feelings that Ann Hathaway had for Shakespeare and the love she has for him is clearly shown in this poem ‘ My living laughing love’ this shows a huge amount of affection for him and indicates how much she missed him and how wonderful the memories are that she has to comfort her.
