  3. You can borrow this book from Dr. Keen • Comes with a DVD with many video clips for illustration • Look for “Teach like a champion” on Youtube for more clips • Look for “Uncommon School”, “Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP)” to find other videos

  4. Teach Like a Champion • Much is targeted at K-12 but descriptions of techniques can make you think about how to apply to your classes too! • Broken into chapters, with exercises for reflection at the end of each chapter

  5. Stretch it • Once a student answers a question correctly, acknowledge that, BUT • Use that answer for further teaching – ask a followup question • Why or how? • “Is there another way to get that answer?” • Give a similar question to make sure they really understand (that the first right answer wasn’t just luck)

I / We / You • Model for teaching a concept • Teacher “I” demonstrates and explains concept • Teacher does an example with help of students “We” • Student does example with help from teacher “We” • Teacher gives problem to students to do by themselves “You” and circulates to interact • Teacher gives several problems to students to do for practice “You”

  7. Pacing • Pacing • Plan for how long an activity takes, practice and time it if necessary • Use EVERY minute! If you don’t have time to start new material, use the time for review!
