Aquifer Model Project: Understanding Texas Aquifers and Conservation

For this major grade project due Wednesday, February 29, you will select a Texas aquifer and delve into its geologic formation, hydrodynamics, and conservation concerns. Your work will consist of research on how the aquifer was formed (15 points), how water flows through it (15 points), and its capacity and conservation issues like pollution and urban sprawl (15 points). Additionally, you'll create a working model that illustrates water and pollutant movements, topped with varied land features (15 points), and test the impact of development on the aquifer (10 points).

  1. Aquifer Model (Aquatic Science) • Major Grade! Due Wednesday , Feb 29! • Select a Texas Aquifer • Your work will consist of… • RESEARCH • (15 pts.) Geologic formation – when & how was it formed? • (15 pts.) Hydrodynamics – how does water flow through it? What is its capacity? • (15 pts.) Conservation Concerns – pollution, subsidence, urban sprawl, overuse, etc. • MODELING • (15 pts.) Use an aquarium and materials determined by your aquifer. • (15 pts.) Must be a working model, demonstrating how water and pollutants enters and exits. • (10 pts.) Must be topped with variety of land features, including roads, buildings, an actual city, etc., as well as open land. • (15 pts.) On Wednesday, you will test your aquifer, and demonstrate how development, overuse, and pollution is affecting your aquifer.
