  4. What makes good instructions? • Explicit • Worded clearly • Worded simply • Concrete • Listed – not paragraphed • Steps • Materials • Multiple representations • Bite size

  5. Why are instructions so important? • Critical component of teaching • Unlocks door to learning • Confusion eliminated • Frustration reduced • Memory enhanced • What’s clear to us may not be clear to our students.

  10. What kinds of written instructions? • Handouts • White board • Power point slide • Note: instructions should be bulleted (no paragraphed) as much as possible.

  11. #3 Repeat Instructions • Repeat instructions 3 times • Increases brain’s ability to attend and learn new material • Sharpens brain’s ability to recognize words • Dyslexia Why does this strategy work? • Sequencing is facilitated • Confusion is eliminated • Memory is enhanced • Frustration is reduced

  12. #4 Chunk Instructions • Chunking= small, meaningful units of information • Reduce activity into smaller tasks • Learner only needs to remember short strings of information Why does this strategy work? • Makes instructions easier to remember • Confusion is eliminated • Memory is enhanced • Frustration is decreased

  13. #5 Solicit Tell-Backs and Show-Mes • ENL students struggle with verbal comprehension due to biological reasons (not lack of effort) • Ask: • Tell me what you’re supposed to do. • Show me what you’re supposed to do. Why does this strategy work? • Confusion is eliminated • Memory is enhanced • Metacognition is increased • Frustration is eliminated
