  1. Liceo Classico BECCARIA Classe IV HAnno scolastico 2007/2008 Materia: ITALIANO Lavoro di Luca MARTINEZ Milano, 26 novembre 2007

  2. “1984” by George ORWELL 1/3 • Summary • In 1984 Winston Smith, the protagonist of the story, lives in London which is part of the country Oceania. • The world is divided into three countries that include the entire globe: Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia. • This is a totalitarian society led by “Big Brother”, where censors everyone’s behaviour, even their thoughts. • Winston is disgusted with his oppressed life and secretly longs to join the fabled “Brotherhood”, a supposed group of underground rebels intended on overthrowing the government. Winston meets Julia and they secretly fall in love and have an affair, something which is considered a crime. • One day, while walking home, Winston met Brian, an inner party member, who gives Winston his address. Winston had exchanged glances with O’Brian and had his dreams about his impression that O’Brian was a member of the Brotherhood. • Since Julia hated the party as much as Winston did, they went to O’Brian’s house together where they were introduced into the Brotherhood. O’Brian is actually a faithful member of the Inner-Party and this is actually a trap for Winston, a trap that O’Brian has been cleverly setting for seven years. Winston and Julia were sent to the Ministry of Love which is a sort of rehabilitation centre for criminals accused of thought-crime. • There, Winston was separated from Julia, and tortured until his beliefs coincided with those of the Party. Winston denounced everything he believed him, even his love for Julia, and was released back into the public where he wastes his days at the “Chestnut Tree Cafe” drinking gin.

  3. “1984” by George ORWELL 2/3 • Comment a paragraph of “1984” • From my point of view, the paragraph more representative of the situation about the control of the society is one in which it said that the telescreen is present in every house and transmits speeches of Big Brother. • When the screen is blank, but big brother spies people with hidden cameras, people also are obliged to do physical exercises led by TV in honor of the patriots who are fighting at the front.

  4. “1984” by George ORWELL 3/3 Big Brother spied on every people “Concetto spaziale, Attese” - 1959 di Lucio FONTANA

  5. “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray BRADBURY 1/2 • Summary • In this book Bradbury speaks about a society where there is no type of communication and information, the only means available is TV. • The government uses this medium to disclose only certain news. It forbade the reading of books, deemed illegal and the firemen are mandated to burn all books. • But the fireman MONTAG, the protagonist of the story, after reading some books offered refuse and is forced to take refuge in the countryside where he met other dissidents. • The city was destroyed by an atomic bomb because the nation is in conflict with another country. People die unaware of the war. Montag, with his friends, sought for a new city where you can pass books and the knowledge learned by heart. • Comment a paragraph of “Fahrenheit 451” • I believe that the most significant part is the one in which Clarisse, a friend of the protagonist who hasn’t got a television, rubbing a particular flower under the chin of a person can understand if you are in love, but this is not for MONTAG • The meant is that his life was empty before the girl who has opened his mind

  6. “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray BRADBURY 2/2 “Addii, stati d’animo II” di Umberto BOCCIONI (1912)

  7. Analogies between “Fahrenheit 451” and “1984” • “Fahrenheit 451” and “1984” have different analogies that address the issue of information management and the control of the society. • Both the books reveal a society that works, but behind the facade, there is something wrong and someone begins to ask questions and doesn’t accept what more is imposed. • The massive use of censorship is organized in different ways: in “1984” news is distorted while in “Fahrenheit 451” any information is forbidden and written books are considered illegal. • The finals of are completely different: Orwell doesn’t leave up us escape route, while Bradbury sees a new life and so a message of hope. “I funerali dell’anarchico Galli” di Umberto CARRA’ (1911)
