Simile and Metaphor. Similes and Metaphors are types of figurative language. Simile. A simile compare two unlike things using one of the following words: like, as, than, resembles . Example: The basketball player’s arms reached out like branches as he blocked the shot.

  1. Simile and Metaphor Similes and Metaphors are types of figurative language.

Simile • A simile compare two unlike things using one of the following words: like, as, than, resembles. • Example: The basketball player’s arms reached out like branches as he blocked the shot. • Example: The basketball player’s arms resembled branches as he blocked the shot. • Example: The basketball player’s arms looked longer than tree branches as he blocked the shot.

  3. Metaphor • A metaphor compares two unlike things without using like, as, than, or resembles. A metaphor says one thing is another. • Example: The boy was a ravished wolf as he inhaled the pizza. • Example: The stars were diamonds in the sky shining down on the water.
