  2. Time Period • The Xia Dynasty lasted for more than 400 years, from 2200 to 1700 BC.

  3. Xia Dynasty • According to legend, the Xia Dynasty was the first dynasty of the Ancient Chinese. • Dynasty: a sequence of rulers from the same family that rules a country. • Emperor: King or most powerful ruler of dynasty.

  4. Did The Xia Really Exist? • In the 1960s and 1970s, archaeologists uncovered what looked like small cities, bronze remains, and tombs that pointed to the existence of a Xia Dynasty. • No written records from this time have been found to confirm the existence of the Xia Dynasty.

  5. Yu The Great • Yu the Great was the first ruler of the Xia Dynasty. • He is best remembered for his battle against flooding.

  6. Yu The Great • The Huang River flooded the Huang River Valley. Yu’s father ordered him to control the flood. Yu worked for 13 years building drainage channels and other projects to stop the flood.

  7. God Of Rivers • Another story, states that the God of Rivers gave Yu a map so that he was able to create his first flood-control plan. • This map was a success in helping Yu find a way to end flooding.

  8. Jie • It is believed an ancestor of Yu, Jie, abused his power as the emperor. • The people of China could no longer tolerate his cruel behavior and fled in large numbers. • The Shang family was able to take advantage of Jie’s weakness and overthrew the Xia Dynasty.
