  2. Essential Question • How is the figurative language of “The Lady of Shalott” by Alfred Lord Tennyson used to express the theme of the poem?

  3. Literary Devices • Rhyme- Corresponding sounds between word endings at the end of lines of poetry. Example: “It was purchased just for you, when you're happy or you're blue, you can wear it on your head, 'round the house or in your bed,” (Excerpt from: “To My Little Sister with Throat Cancer, Happy Trails to Cancer Shirt” by Sam French)

  4. Literary Devices (cont.) • Alliteration- Same letter or sound at the beginning of words that are adjacent or closely connected. Example: Angels of April always ask for apples. • Metaphor- A word or phrase for one thing that is used to describe something else to show that they are similar. Example: I’m swamped with homework this week!

  5. Literary Devices (cont.) • Symbol- An object or concept that is representative of something else. Example: “Ah Sunflower, weary of time, Who countest the steps of the sun; Seeking after that sweet golden clime Where the traveler’s journey is done;” (Excerpt from: “Ah, Sunflower” by William Blake)

Symbolism in “The Lady of Shalott” • Symbolism of the river: • Line 1: “On either side the river lie” • From start to finish the river is a reference point for transitions in the poem. • It symbolizes the backbone of the poem. • Just as the water in a river flows, the movement or progression of the poem flows in reference to the river.

  10. The Metaphor of the Mirror • Lines 46-48: “And moving thro’ a mirror clear / That hangs before her all the year, / Shadows of the world appear.” • The mirror is clear, but it is full of shadows? What do you think this means? • If the mirror is the Lady of Shalott’s only view of the outside world and it shows her shadows, what does that say about her view of life?

The Main Theme • The main theme is the isolation of the artist. • The Lady of Shalott spends her whole life weaving her beautiful art but no one can see it. • Her only view of the outside world is a skewed one. • As soon as she tries to leave her solitude she is cursed and dies. • Tennyson argues that the modern artist is faced with the dilemma of social involvement or personal exploration. • According to this poem, one cannot do both without poisoning the originality of personal expression of art.
