Allegory Refresher – Simply Read… • The events in an allegory can be read on two levels. • The story has a literal meaning (straightforward) and a figurative meaning (something larger than themselves). • An allegory is often written to teach a lesson. • The story you are about to read was published during the Cold War between the U.S. and the former Soviet Union. Read your background on pg. 364 to help you understand this time period. • Reading more about the Cold War on your own may help you understand this story as an allegory.

Analysis for “The Golden Kite, The Silver Wind” • Discuss how this story can be seen as an allegory for the Cold War. • What connections do you see between the events in the story and the conflict between the U.S. and the former Soviet Union?
