  2. Service Learning • Service-learning involves students in community service activities and applies the experience to personal and academic development. Service-learning occurs when there is "a balance between learning goals and service outcomes" (Furco 3). • Service-learning differs from internship experience or volunteer work in its "intention to equally benefit the provider and the recipient of the service as well as to ensure equal focus on both the service being provided and the learning that is occurring" (Furco 5). • Service-learning course objectives are linked to real community needs that are designed in cooperation with community partners and service recipients. In service-learning, course materials inform student service and service informs academic dialogue and comprehension. • Service-learning engages students in a three-part process: classroom preparation through explanation and analysis of theories and ideas; service activity that emerges from and informs classroom context; and structured reflection tying service experience back to specific learning goals. • http://writing.colostate.edu/guides/teaching/service_learning/definition.cfm

  4. What Service Learning means to me • I think service learning is very important. • Service learning is important because each student should give back to their community. • Service learning builds character, and it also helps student in the future. • The community will remember students that gave back and that could help them get a job in the near future.

  5. The Doug Henderson III Memorial Fund • The organization was founded in memory of a young boy who lost a valiant fight with cancer in 2003. Through tremendous support from his family, friends, and the community, Doug’s Legacy will be one of the great contributions of spirits and gifts to his hometown.

  6. The Doug Henderson III Memorial Fund • I had to go around to local businesses and ask for donations for the auction

  7. How I benefited from it • Reaching out to the community and asking for donations helped me become closer with the City of Valdosta. • When I asked for donations, the businesses were more than happy to donate, which showed me how supportive this community is.

  8. How I benefited from it I asked Chick-Fil-A for a donation.

  9. I asked Hooters for a donation.

  10. Bruster’s Donated a Gift Card.

  11. I also participated in Relay for Life

  12. Signs that hung throughout the campus of Valdosta State University to encourage students to participate in Relay For Life.

  13. During relay for life I walked around the front lawn and gave donations and participated in activities at the other booths to support their organizations.

  14. Relay for Life • I have participated in relay for life for the past three years. • Each year I donate, as well as raise money for my organization. • I have two friends that have one a fight with cancer so I walk in honor of them. • I enjoy doing relay for life, it gives me the opportunity to connect with my community and raise money for the American Cancer Society.
