  1. Howard Hodgkin By Harriet Judge

  2. Facts • Full Name: Sir Gordon Howard Eliot Hodgkin • Born: 6 August 1932, Dorset, England • Age: 77 • Job: Painter and Printmaker. • His work is mostly associated with Abstraction. • Influenced By: Edgar Degas, Édouard Vuillard

  3. Education Howard Hodgkin was born in Dorset. He went to school at Bryanston School and then went to Camberwell Art School. After that he studied in the Bath Academy of Art.

  4. Early Art Howards early paintings are mostly made up of hard-edged curved shapes with a limited number of colours.

  5. Later Work • In the early 1970s, his style became more spontaneous, with vaguely recognisable shapes using bright colours and bolder shapes. • His work was called "semi-abstract", and is often compared to the work of Henri Matisse. • In 1984, Howard represented Britain at the Venice Biennale. • In 1985 he won the Turner Prize. • And in 1992 he was knighted.

  6. Styles • Howard Hodgkin's paintings often seek to re-visit memories of times with close friends and Family. These painting also show great emotion – something he was very famous for. • Many of Howard’s paintings took years to complete. He often painted over the frames of his pictures, emphasising the idea of the painting as an object. A few of his paintings are not shown in frames but are surrounded by rectangles of simple colour.

  8. My Favourite This one is my favourite because it is simple and uses 2 simple colours: Light Blue and Dark Blue. It has been painted on a board and then put into a frame which has also been painted.
