About Polk… • Born on November 2, 1795 • Mecklenburg County, North Carolina • Died June 15, 1849 • Grew up with medical problems • Had multiple surgeries to remove stones in his bladder • Studied at the University of North Carolina • Graduated with honors in math, and gained interest in law and government • He wanted to be a lawyer in his home town, Tennessee

  3. Continued… • Served as a State Representative • Elected to Congress at the age 27 • Lasted 14 years, with 2 terms of speaker of the house • Married Sarah Childress, who influenced his political views and ideas • They didn’t have any children • “Young Hickory” • After Andrew Jackson

  4. Presidential Election… • Presented as the Democratic candidate when democrats found no other men to support • Won the election of 1844, beating the Whig candidate Henry Clay • Encouraged Americans to support his “Manifest Destiny” vision • George M. Dallas was elected as his Vice President

  11. George M. Dallas… • Vice President • July 10, 1792- December 31, 1864 • Graduated from Princeton in 1810 • Opened his own legal practice • Mayor of Philadelphia • The City and County of Dallas is named after him

  12. Treaties… • The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo • Signed in February 1848 to end the Mexican American War. • US gained Nevada and California • US paid Mexico $15 million for territory • Decreasing Mexico’s territory by half
