  3. Site Ranking This internship provided many great opportunities I was able to gain some experience in a variety of departments such as public relations, membership, fundraising, marketing, etc. The organization only has 13 full time employees so it is easy to get to know everybody and develop great personal and professional relationships. Unlike most sports jobs, the hours were a typical work week, 9:00-5:00 Monday-Friday, which allows interns to spend their weekends enjoying the Colorado Rocky Mountains. There were some negative aspects to the internship as well. During the interview process we talked about the event and sports memorabilia aspects of the company in great detail as these were the two areas I was most interested in. I was told I would be able to spend a good amount of times in these areas and would get to travel to at least one event. However, once I got there I was not given these opportunities which was very disappointing. Furthermore, during the month of March most employees were out of the office working in Arizona or Florida for spring training. This led to there being little work available around the office for long stretches.

  7. Words of Wisdom • Make sure you always receive a due date when asked to work on a project • Establish both personal and professional relationships with employees of the organization • Pay attention to the little details of both your work and what is going on around the office • If somebody is working on a project or in an area you are interested in ask if you can assist them or at least observe what they are doing • Seek out constructive criticism so you know which areas you can improve in • Always be willing to learn something new and never assume you know everything

  8. Internship Objectives • To identify a department in the sport industry that I most enjoy working in so that I can pursue a career in this department. • The MLBPAA has recently been growing larger. I want to be able to facilitate this growth and allow it to continue by helping with the extra work load that this growth has brought to the company. • One area that I struggle in is being vocal in the workplace. I am fairly introverted so I would like to work on becoming more extroverted and involving others in my work (when applicable). • One area that I have thought about possibly choosing a career in is the Sports Information/Statistician department. I would like to specifically work on tasks that will immerse me in this department so that I can see what is needed to be successful and if it truly is an avenue I would like to pursue.

  9. Daily Activities • At the MLBPAA there is never a typical day as you are constantly receiving and completing different projects. Different projects that I worked on include: • Assisting in the interview process for the Fundraising and Development Assistant and the summer interns • Writing press notifications and press releases for upcoming events • Creating an All-Star team of retired MLB players whose licensing rights we own for Sony to use in their 2012 video game • Data entry and retrieval in Raiser’s Edge database • Authoring articles for the quarterly newsletter • Researching MLB spring training rosters and putting together the pledge appeal materials for each player, coach and staff member • Working on my project involving the Heart and Hustle award

  10. Project Description • Planning and Mapping the Operational and Promotional Strategies for the MLBPAA Heart & Hustle Award • For the past 6 years the MLBPAA has honored one member from each 30 MLB teams with the Heart & Hustle award. They then select one overall winner from these 30. Last year MLB.com took interest in the award and began helping us promote it. My job was to work on continuing to expand the value of the award and put together a standardized plan on how to conduct the implementation of the award process in future years. • This involved me creating sponsorship presentation geared toward companies such as Gatorade, Cheerios and Under Armour. I also put together each teams voting committee, created a timeline for the award process and began working on the details of what would be needed at each presentation.
