Notable Successes • 1st Finance Minister in India • Brought economic reforms to India in 1991 • Ended the Licence Raj system • Opened foreign investment & introduced competition • Increased the Indian Federal Reserve • Federal Reserve in 1991 barely $1B, now $283B • 2010 Time magazine listed Singh as 100 Most Influential People in the World

  7. Controversies • Parliamentary investigation report criticized Dr. Singh’s ministry for not being able to check & anticipate a $1.8B securities scandal • Offered his resignation as Finance Minister but then PM, PV NarasimhaRao refused & promised to punish individuals listed in report

US-Indo Relationship • Extensive cultural, strategic, military & economic relationship • Improved under Presidents George W Bush & Bill Clinton • Declining under President Barak Obama • India believes there’s an air of ambivalence blowing their way from Washington • India believes US pulling out of Afghanistan will require more dependence on China at India’s expense • Hillary Clinton scratched India off her itinerary when she visited Asia • Foreign Policy magazine reported previous administration recommended India as a “key stop” • Obama administration’s official foreign policy agenda didn’t even mention India • Obama held his first state dinner at White House in honor of Dr. Singh • If India ever has a war with China or Pakistan, there’s doubt the USA would promise to come to their defense • India fearful of China takeover • Obama wants to improve relations w/China, making India hesitant in pursuing development of US-Indo relationship • Investments in each other’s country

Recommendations • US allows easier trading between countries to promote more investments • More jobs & prosperity for both countries • Reduce protectionism in the US • Reduce tariffs & taxes • Conduct meetings between China & India to help their relation • Pledge support of India if China were to attack India, US would support India • Create a new joint project for US & India • Cyber terrorism • Share technological advances in protection of government, business and personal computer information & the tracing of terrorists • Work on creating peace agreements with neighboring countries • Provide support when terrorist attacks happen on Indian soil
