  5. Take a minute to discuss with your new teammates: Was this assessment accurate? Accuracy

  6. Team Based Learning (TBL) • Form Teams of 4 to 6 people • Can be random assignment • Or systematic (i.e., Pig Personality exercise) • Put your chairs into a circle • 96% Student Approval Rating!

  7. What is TBL & How Does it Work? • http://www.teambasedlearning.org/ • Team Building Activities (TBAs) • “Pig Personality Profile” • Face Drawing • “Life Boat” • More Ideas • i-RATs & t-RATs (Can be “Flipped”) (Readiness Assurance Test) • Team Application Activities (TAAs) • Problem Based Learning (PBL) • Team Evaluations

  8. What do Students in Teams Do? • Facilitator • Moderates team discussion, keeps the group on task, and distributes work. • Recorder • Takes notes summarizing team discussions and decisions, and keeps all necessary records. • Reporter • Serves as group spokesperson to the class or instructor, summarizing the group’s activities and/or conclusions. • Other Roles (Optional) • Time Keeper • Researcher • Devil’s Advocate

  9. “Face Drawing” • Pair up w/ someone next to you • Take out a sheet of paper and a pen or pencil (crayons work too) • For 30 seconds study your partner’s face (yes, this is uncomfortable) • Next, close your eyes and do not open them until you are told to • When your teacher says “go”, you will have 1 minute to draw your partner’s face from memory… • GO!

  10. “Life Boat” • Appoint one recorder and one reporter • Be prepared to discuss w/ the big group (class) • In your teams discuss the following scenario: You and your teammates were in a shipwreck hitting some rocks somewhere off coast of Bermuda. No one knows where you are because your ship’s communication device was badly damaged in the crash. The ship is slowly taking on water and will shortly sink. Unfortunately, the ship has only one life boat and it is made for one person only (it will sink w/ 2 or more or if people cling to it’s sides). You have 2 minutes to discuss and decide who will get to go in the life boat. Write down who, why, and the thought process

  11. “FTFD” V. William Harris, Ph.D. • F= Fact • T= Think • F= Feel • D= Do

  12. FTFD = Effective Questioning Techniques FACT You can start by stating, “Did you know the current divorce rate for all 1st time marriages is 50%? That’s one in every two marriages.” FTFD

  13. THINK • Why do you think this is the case? • Why is there such a high divorce rate? • What’s going on? • Who do you think is impacted by divorce and why? • Ask your students to take 2 minutes to discuss w/ their teammates (TBL) • Have each team appoint one person to write their team’s #1 reason up on the board • Have them prepared their reporter to share the team’s answers w/ the big class FTFD

  14. FEEL It’s important to dig deeper – using both sides of the brain Ask the students to discuss w/ their teammates: “How do you feel about divorce? Why?” You may use visuals to help (see bottom image) FTFD

  15. DO This is the action phase: Have students work w/ their teammates to come up w/a plan of action at the micro, exo, and or macro level (Bronfenbrenner) to address the issue of divorce Ask students to brainstorm a solution, write it down, and be prepared to share it w/ the big group (class). FTFD
