Background of the Foundation • Established in 1998 • Serve as the assistance arm of the members of the Federation of Nikkei-jin Kai Philippines • Assist Filipino-Japanese descendants in documentary requirements in securing long-term resident visas for Japan • Has assisted more than 2,000 descendants

Federation of Nikkei-jin Kai Philippines • Umbrella Organization of all Filipino-Japanese associations in the Phils. • Consists of 15 Chapters, the biggest of which is in Davao, the Philippine Nikkei-jin Kai Inc. • Chapters in Baguio, Manila-Central Luzon, Bicol, Western Visayas, Cebu • Other parts of Mindanao,

What is Nikkei-jin? • Nikkei- term for Japanese emigrants from Japan and their descendants to other parts of the world. • First recorded emigration was during the 12th century to the Philippines • Mass emigration started during the Meiji Era, to North America and later to Latin America • Estimated 2.5M nikkeis living in adopted countries • “Nikkei-jin” is the Japanese term for Japanese Emigrants and their descendants

  6. The Philippine Nikkei-jin • Offsprings from the union between Japanese father and Filipino mother • 2nd generation and their descendants • Majority of these 2nd generation were born before 1945 • Majority of nikkei-jins now belong to the 3rd and 4th generations

  7. Tracing the Nikkeijins • Organization of Filipino-Japanese Associations • Founding of the Federation of Nikkei-jin Kai Philippines • Japan Ministry of Justice-funded research and collection of data of 2nd generation • 2,500 names were generated • Less than 50% were documented

As to Generation: 2nd, 3rd, 4th….5th As to degree of Recognition: Category A-family registry was found in Japan and 2nd generation is listed and registered in Japan Category B-2nd generation is not listed or mentioned in the family registry Category C – known to be descendants, but lack hard evidence therefore their family registry is not traceable Classification of Nikkei-jins

  9. Importance of Marriage Documents for Nikkei-jins • Recognition of Nationality-Upgrade of category level from B to A • Visa Purposes – to prove legitimacy • Visa Purposes – extend privilege to a descendant’s legitimate spouse
