Mental Health Impact • Mental illness ranks first among illnesses that cause disability in the US, Canada, and Western Europe. • In 1997, out of $1 trillion spent on health care, $71 billion was spent on direct costs of treating mental illness. • Depression is a leading cause of absenteeism and lost productivity in the workplace
