  2. Vocab. • Urban: area of city • Rural: area of small towns & farms • Conservative: favoring traditional views and values • Speakeasies: hidden nightclubs &/or bar that illegally sold alcohol • Repeal: to take away • Bootleggers: people who made, sold, &/or transported alcohol illegally

  3. “Cities… the place to be!” • 1920 census: • 51.2% of Americans live in cities • 1922-1929: 2 million ppl per year migrate from rural to urban areas * Please answer the questions for the graph (top slide)

  4. Urban Living • Much more diverse • Americans + immigrants from everywhere! • SCARY!? • Tolerated drinking, gambling, & casual dating • Streets filled w/ strangers • Fast-paced way of life

  5. Rural Living • conservative values and close social & family relationships • Slower-paced life • More religious and/or moral base

  6. Problems between Rural & Urban beliefs • Conflict # 1: Alcohol • Rural reformers dislike alcohol • Alcohol = crime, wife & child abuse, accidents on job • 18th Amendment passes: Outlaws sale, drinking, & manufacturing of alcohol
