In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

The major risk factor in infant developmental problems is due to premature delivery more common in multiple pregnancies (twins etc.). The good news is that IVF can help many couples have children who would otherwise be infertile. Overall, the vast majority of children born from IVF do not have an abnormality.

  1. What Is In Vitro Fertilization? • In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a type of assistive reproductive technology (ART). During IVF, mature eggs are collected from the woman’s ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a lab. Then the fertilized egg (embryo) or eggs are implanted in the woman’s uterus. This process takes about two weeks. • Depending on your situation, fertilization can be done with: • Your eggs and your partner’s sperm • Your eggs and donor sperm • Donor eggs and your partner’s sperm • Donor eggs and donor sperm • Donated embryos • Your doctor can also implant embryos in a surrogate or gestational carrier. • Since 1978, more than 6 million test tube babies have been born worldwide. The treatment has brought hope to millions of couples.

  2. How Is In Vitro Fertilization Performed? There are five steps involved in IVF: 1 Stimulation of eggs through hormone therapy 2 Retrieving the eggs from the ovaries 3 Insemination (Fertilization of the eggs and sperm) 4 Embryo Culture 5 Transfer Stimulation The production of eggs is done through hormone therapy. To boost the production of eggs in a woman, fertility drugs are to be given. Normally, a woman produces one egg/month but the drugs enable the ovaries to produce several eggs which would help in the IVF procedure. Egg Retrieval Egg retrieval is known as follicular aspiration. It’s a surgical procedure performed with anesthesia. Your doctor will use an ultrasound wand to guide a needle through your vagina, into your ovary and into an egg-containing follicle. The needle will suction eggs and fluid out of each follicle.

  3. How Is In Vitro Fertilization Performed? Insemination The male partner will now need to give a semen sample. A technician will mix the sperm with the eggs in a petri dish. If that doesn’t produce embryos, your doctor may decide to use ICSI. Embryo Culture Your doctor will monitor the fertilized eggs to ensure that they’re dividing and developing. The embryos may undergo testing for genetic conditions at this time. Transfer When the embryos are big enough, they can be implanted. This normally occurs three to five days after fertilization. Implantation involves inserting a thin tube called a catheter inserted into your vagina, past your cervix, and into your uterus. Your doctor then releases the embryo into your uterus. Pregnancy occurs when the embryo implants itself in the uterine wall. This can take 6 to 10 days. A blood test will determine if you’re pregnant.

  4. In Vitro Fertilization Success Rate? In-vitro Fertilization treatment is a method for couples, single parents and also for a couple of the same gender who want to have a baby. This procedure is generally 6-8 weeks long, as first person has to get ready mentally and physically. They have to prepare for it by taking medicines for egg maturation, leading towards extraction of the eggs from the ovary, eggs are then fertilized with the sperm in a laboratory. After that implanted back into the womb when it turns into an embryo for further developing into a baby. It is explained that, many of the people facing infertility in their marriage life usually get into a situation where they think that should they take up the IVF procedure or not? Will it work for them or not? This is because IVF is a time taking and costly process for treatment. Though it is impossible to predict the exact result of the success of the treatment but definitely there are research and calculations done by the specialist to find out approximate IVF success rate by age and embryos. However, many doctor say, not to keep any false high hopes as every human body has its own reaction and working agenda towards the treatment. It may have worked for others may not work for you or vice versa. One of the leading factors that are most likely to affect the success rate of the whole IVF treatment is age of the woman undergoing IVF treatment. Age has important factor in women’s pregnancies for long, no matter if it is a natural pregnancy or an artificial pregnancy treatment. Similarly, it plays a significant role in IVF treatment as well. Although, it had been noticed, that women of lower age group are most likely to have higher success rate. Whereas women of comparatively older age groups tend to face a decrease in the success rates of this treatment.

  5. IVF Success Rates The success rate of an IVF cycle varies as it depends on many factors, but it ranges between 30% and 35%. During a good run, it’s 40%. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, IVF cycles resulted in live births in 38.3% of women under 35, with the number falling to 32% for women aged 35 to 37. The success rate fell to 23.1% for those aged 38 to 40, and to 10.4% in women over 40. In the UK, IVF is successful in 29% of women under 35, 23% of women aged 35 to 37, 15% of women aged 38 to 39, 9% of 40- to 42-year-olds, and 2% of women over 44. Many clinics in India claim success rates that are two to 20 times higher. But Noble Heart is the best infertility center in Rohtak does not claim any false rates. They have a well-experienced super-specialty team that provides the best infertility solutions like IVF, IUI, and ICSI. According to research, an increment is found in the success rate in every age group as the technologies are refined and doctors become more experienced.

  6. IVF SUCCESS RATE BY NUMBER OF EMBRYOS There are plenty of factors affecting the success rate of IVF (in-vitro fertilization) treatment but one of the most important factors which efficiently decide the success rate is an embryo, the number and the quality of the embryo. Most of the failure in the treatment occurs due to wrong quality embryo used in the treatment. There are techniques like PGD (Pre-implantation diagnosis) which helps the doctor to carry out the most efficient embryo for IVF Treatment. There are embryos that look efficient by outer appearance but are lacking factors needed for pregnancy but on the other hand embryos which don’t look efficient on the outer appearance are most likely to have all the efficiency required for successfully and to determine, differentiate and further select the appropriate embryo the PGD technique is used by the doctors.

  7.  Single vs. Multiple embryos It is recommended that when carrying out IVF treatment only single embryo transfer is considered to be healthy for the pregnancy results. The most important factor for a mother is the health of the baby, so if we transfer multiple embryos the chances of having twins and multiple births increases along with which the risk factor for the baby also increase its level simultaneously. Also, the success rate for both single embryo transfer and multiple embryo transfer is more or less similar. No matter how many numbers of the embryo for IVF are used, one should not neglect the risk factor. As per one of the studies of fertility research and practice it had been calculated that the success rate of single embryo transfer was 45% whereas for double embryo transfer was 42%. This clearly shows that it is more likely to be more or less similar to each other. So single embryo, is most likely to be safe and sufficient number of embryos for IVF treatment.

  8. IVF SUCCESS RATE IN INDIA India has been greatly developing in the field of medicine and technology as well. It had been years sinceIVF treatment came in India and was widely accepted and adopted by couples facing infertility problems. The success rate as talked about earlier greatly varies and depends upon a wider range of factors in IVF, the age, the lifestyle, the cause of infertility and of course the most important factor “embryo”. IVF success rates in India, falls between 30-35%, as calculated by the obstetrics and gynecologist department of India. During a good run of the treatment, the success rates tend to increase up to 40%.  The resulting calculations of success rates are highly comparable with many other nations as the number being quite high for women under 35 years of age.
