Engineering Education in India Globalization of economic activities, and mobility of professionals across national borders and emergence of a knowledge society are putting new insights on the competency requirement of engineers, their role in the emerging international scenario and their ability to work harmoniously and effectively in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams.

  4. Engineering Education in India Globalization is radically changing the way national economies around the world design, produce, distribute and consume goods and services. Engineers are in the midst of this dynamic development. They need to work in teams and on projects with members from different nations and continents. They need to be internationally mobile, whether physically or virtually to respond to the growing international concern about the preparation of engineering workforce in future.

Engineering Education in India India has emerged as a major player in the world in the field of engineering education and Indian engineers have contributed significantly to the economic and technological development of many foreign lands not only in the information technology sector but also in general engineering services and in hi-tech research and development in solid-state electronics, communications and embedded systems.

  6. Engineering Education in India • Today more than 2300 engineering institutions in India are turning out more than 6,00,000 engineers every year. Indian engineering education represents one of the largest educational systems in the world. • The IITs have been in the forefront of engineering education in India, followed by NITs and many other centrally funded Institutes in furthering the reach of engineering education.

ADMISSION TO PREMIER TECHNICAL INSTITUTIONS IN INDIA • Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) Scheme offers admission to under graduate Programmes in NITs, IIITs and other Premier Technical Institutions in India • Admissions open for • Foreign Nationals • Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) • 50% tuition fee wavier for SAARC countries

SALIENT FEATURES of DASA 2011 • DASA scheme for Engineering Programs started in 2001 • Facilitates entry of Foreign Nationals/PIOs /NRIs to Indian Education System • NITK Surathkal entrusted with coordination of DASA scheme from 2010-11 for three years • Number of seats offered was 2030 in 2011-12 • Number of Participating Institutions were 31 • On line admission process & On line fee payment process • On line seat allotment process • SAT Subject Test scores for Merit list preparation

ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY • Senior Secondary [10+2] or equivalent • Compulsory subjects • Physics and Mathematics • Optional subjects (any one of the following ) • Chemistry, Bio-technology, Computer Science, Biology • At least 60% aggregate marks or 6.75 CGPA on a 10 point scale • Valid SAT Subject Test scores • SAT Subject Test subjects Maths level II, Physics and Chemistry • SAT Subject Test best score of each subject in case of multiple attempts

SAT Subject Test Score • Scholastic Aptitude Test • SAT Subjects Test in Maths level II, Physics and Chemistry • Merit list based on total score of these subjects • Minimum SAT score for eligibility is 1440 • In case of multiple attempts best score of individual subjects will be considered • SAT subject test Score to be sent to Designated Institute Code 6530 • More details visit www.collegeboard.com

RESIDENTIAL REQUIREMENT • Must pass the qualifying examination (inclusive of 11thand 12th standard or equivalent) from abroad only(for NRI) • School study certificate from the school authorities to be submitted along with application • Copy of Passport to be submitted along with hard copy of the application • Nepali candidates to get authentication from Embassy of India in Kathmandu, Nepal / Embassy of Nepal at New Delhi

  12. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION • Two stage process (i) Online application (http://www.dasanit.org) (ii) Submission of hard copy of the application along with required documents • User friendly front end for online application • At each stage email conformations will be sent from www.dasanit.org

FEE STRUCTURE & FEE PAYMENT • Non refundable Registration fee of US$ 250 • First year Tuition Fee of US$ 7,000 • Foreign Nationals from SAARC countries • 50% Tuition fee waiver • Mode of Fee Payment • Bank Transfer / Demand Draft / E-payment • If Demand Draft, drawn in favor of “NITK DASA” payable at Mangalore

  14. SEAT ALLOTMENT PROCEDURE • Based on SAT Subject Test scores and the choices given by the candidate, in the order of their merit and priority taken together • Allotment published on DASA web site (www.dasanit.org) • Admission letter through email • Acceptance by candidate through email • Physical reporting at allotted institutions
