  1. GlobalWarming?

  2. Global Warming? • Learning Target • to explain what global warming is and describe what causes it • Starter • Heads and tails exercise – word bank / key words • Main Activity • B • Plenary • c

  3. Heads and TailsMatch up the correct term with the correct definition A change in the average daily weather conditions Global warming Climate change An increase in world climatic temperatures Greenhouse effect Nitrous oxide, methane and carbon dioxide Greenhouse gases Coal, oil and natural gas – finite resources Fossil fuels Heat is trapped and the earth is insulated because of greenhouse gases

  4. Word Bank / Key Termsdid you get the answers correct? Global warming An increase in world climatic temperatures Climate change A change in the average daily weather conditions Greenhouse effect Heat is trapped and the earth is insulated because of greenhouse gases Greenhouse gases Nitrous oxide, methane and carbon dioxide Fossil fuels Coal, oil and natural gas – finite resources

  5. What is global warming? Gradual rise in the earth’s surface temperature, significant enough to cause climate change.

  6. How have temperatures changed? The following graph shows how temperatures have changed over recent years.

  7. What is the other evidence for global warming? • Rising global temperatures • Increasing storms • Changing Ocean currents • Shrinking Antarctic ice sheets

  8. What causes global warming? Greenhouse Effect

  9. The Greenhouse Effect

  10. Life without the greenhouse effect! Earth would be too cold for life to survive (about 330C colder) so greenhouse gases are vital. BUT WHAT ARE THE GASES?

  11. The greenhouse gases? What does this chart tell us about the different quantities of gases?

  12. So what is the problem? The concentration of greenhouse gases has remained fairly constant for the last 10,000 years since the last Ice Age, when levels were lower. However, in the last 100 years the concentration of these gases has increase rapidly. This means more of the sun’s radiation is reflected back to the Earth’s surface causing global warming.

  13. Why have quantities of gases changed over the last 100 years?

  14. Since the Industrial Revolution, humans have been pumping out huge quantities of carbon dioxide, raising levels by 30%. Burning of fossil fuels contributes (coal, oil and natural gas).

  15. Trees are being cut down. Therefore, not as much carbon dioxide is absorbed by trees, so less oxygen is produced.

  16. Plenary Pop Quiz • What is global warming? • What is the name of the effect which keeps the surface of the Earth warm? • What does the term 'greenhouse gases' mean? What are the main greenhouse gases? • List two major changes to our lifestyles which have resulted in the increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in the last 150 years. • The reduction in the area of rainforests on the planet will have several effects on our environment. List three major effects.

  17. Short answer questions • What do the terms 'sources' and 'sinks' mean with reference to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? • and three that could happen in the UK. • The Government is taking various measures in the UK to reduce the greenhouse effect. List four of these measures. • List five ways you can do your bit and help reduce global warming at home. • Why is the government trying to improve the public transport network? • List five ways you can help reduce global warming at school.

  18. Long answer questions • Describe what the greenhouse effect is and how it causes global warming. • Explain how sinks of carbon dioxide are being reduced and sources increasing. • Use the link to look at typical street scene painted by William Callow in 1853 . Use it to suggest ways that town life has changed over the last 150 years and describe the effect this has had on the environment. • The UK and other developed countries have promised to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases they produce. Suggest reasons why developing countries are not able to make the same promises. • What do you understand by the term 'renewable energy'? Explain the advantages and disadvantages of one form of renewable energy currently being used in the UK. • Recycling is seen as one way to reduce global warming. Explain why this is so. As well as reducing global warming, recycling protects the environment in other ways. Suggest what these might be. • Different people can make a different contribution to energy saving. Suggest important ways that three of the following people could save energy during their typical working days: an office worker, a grocery shop owner, a farmer, a long distance lorry driver, a builder and a teacher

  19. Quiz Click on the answers you think are right, a window will pop-up and tell you if you are. 1) The Earth gets most of its energy from the Sun in the form of carbon dioxideinfra-red radiationvisible radiation 2) The Sun's energy warms the Earth and the Earth emits infra-red radiationcarbon dioxidewater 3) The greenhouse gases in the atmosphere acts like what part of the greenhouse? the doorthe glassthe frame 4) How has the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere changed over the last 100 years? it has gone down by a thirdit has gone up by a thirdit has stayed the same 5)What is the most important man-made greenhouse gas? carbon dioxidenitrous oxidecarbon monoxide 6)Places on Earth where carbon dioxide is produced and removed are called: springs and drainssources and sinksreservoirs and holes 7) What started about 200 years ago and dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide made? the French Revolutionthe Industrial Revolutionthe invention of the bicycle 8)The temperature on the Earth has gone up by how much over the last 100 years? by about 5°Cby about 50°Cby about 0.5°C 9) In each of the following select the right word to give the consequences around the world if we carry on emitting more and more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The average temperature will go up/downThe sea levels will drop/riseThere could be less/more areas of vegetation on the earthall/some countries will find it difficult to grow enough foodMalaria will flourish in more/less places 10) In each of the following select the right word to give the consequences in the UK if we carry on emitting more and more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. the average temperature could rise by 0.3°C/3°Cthe overall annual rainfall will increase/decreasethe south and east will be more/less susceptible to droughtsthe north and west will be less/more susceptible to storms and floods 11) By 2010 the Government intends to have lowered carbon dioxide to 5% below 1990 levels20% below 1990 levels12.5% above 1990 levels 12) Renewable sources of energy like solar and wind power can use coal or gasdon't use coal or gasrely on nuclear fuels 13) Recycling 1 tonne of paper saves 5 average sized trees15 average sized trees25 average sized trees
