  1. Fable Quest TASK Your task is to write a fable from a foreign land using animals native to that country and placing the story in that country by referring to a landform or landmark that is unique to that country. A fable is a short, often amusing, story that focuses on one action and has a moral, a lesson about human behavior. Most fables use animals with human characteristics as the main characters.

  2. Task • In order to create the fable for your destination country, you and your travel companion (partner) will: • ·       Read four online fables • ·       Analyze them to find the elements of a fable • ·       Research the country to which you wish to travel. • ·       Compile information about that country regarding its native animals geographical features (such as rivers, mountains, cities, landforms, landmarks etc.) and other points of interest. • ·       Create a story map for your new fable • Write and illustrate your fable and present a reading of it.

  3. Read These Four Fables • The Hare and the Tortoise • The Lion and the Mouse • The Ant and the Dove • The Ant and the Grasshopper

  4. Fables • After reading the four familiar fables, create and fill out this chart. • Fable Chart • Be sure to put your name on your paper! • You can go here to read more fables. If you need ideas when you start writing, go here.

  5. Country Facts • You will be creating your own fable. Before you do so, you need to get information about one of these countries. • Australia • Brazil • Ireland • Egypt • Country Fact Sheet • You will need to write down some facts about the country you’ve chosen. Use your own paper to answer the questions on this sheet. • Country Fact Sheet

  6. Creation of a Fable • Use your completed Elements of a Fable chart and your Country Fact Sheet to develop your fable. • Go here if you need ideas. If you look near the top of the page, there is a section just for looking up morals. • Create a new fable to teach one moral. Be sure to incorporate native animals of your country as the characters, some geographical feature of the country as the setting, and any other interesting fact that fits your fable.

  7. Presentation • You will be presenting your fable. • Here are your options- • Group Projects • Write a script. Tell the story through a puppet show. • Turn the fable into a play. Act out the fable using props and costumes. Turn in a script. (You can video tape these and bring the video/dvd to class if you want.) • Individual Projects • Read the fable aloud to the class and explain how the details correspond with the country you researched. • Create a picture book. Use detailed pictures with color. Use the last page to for facts about the country you researched to write your fable. • Create a detailed diorama for your fable. Include a copy of the fable and facts from the country you researched.
