  2. What is HomePlug? • HomePlug is a group of specifications to allow networking using electrical wiring. • Owned and developed by HomePlug PowerLine Alliance. • First release was in June 2001.

  3. Advantages • Since it uses electrical wiring, installation is cheap and quick, with no additional wiring required. • Useful in home networks , as every AC device can potentially have a 100-1000 megabit connection. • Uses OFDM modulation, so multiple signals can share the same power line.

  4. Version History • HomePlug 1.0 (2001) : First version. Used DES encryption. HomePlug AV(2005): Switched to AES encryption (more secure) data transfer rate: 200 Mbs at physical layer, 80 Mbs at MAC layer.

  5. Version history • HomePlug AV2(2012): Added MIMO support, physical data transfer rate 1 Gbs+, first to be compliant with IEEE 1901 standard. • HomePlug Green PHY: designed to be energy efficient, with low power usage. Specifically for home networks. Compatible with AV, AV2, and IEEE 1901 compliant.

  6. HomePlug Adapters • Adapter plugs into any electrical socket, and an Ethernet cable is used to connect to a router. • Devices are connected to the network through an Ethernet cable connected to an adapter plugged into any electrical outlet. • Imgsrc: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HomePlug

  7. Security • Because the signals may be easily intercepted, encryption is very important. • 128 bit AES encryption is used. • Specific password is set for each network , which is used to change the encryption key. • Possible issue: while the network can be accessed by any OS, the software to enable encryption may require Windows (depending on the manufacturer)

  8. IEEE 1901 • IEEE 1901 is a standard specifically for Broadband over Power Lines (BPL). • Used by current HomePlug standards.

  9. IEEE 1901 Physical Layer • There are two separate physical layers in 1901. An implementation may choose one or have both. • One uses FFT OFDM modulation and the other uses wavelet OFDM. (HomePlug uses the FFT modulation.)

  10. IEEE 1901 MAC Layer • Two separate MAC layers: One used for internet access and another for local, in home network. • QoS mechanisms for time division in place. • The Inter-System Protocol (ISP) is used to manage frequency and time resources, since all devices are sharing the same electrical wiring.
