  1. Writing a one-sided argumentative essay

  2. In a one-sided argumentative essay, you argue either for or against an issue. You begin by presenting your point of view, and then provide a series of arguments to support that point of view. In your conclusion, you should reiterate your point of view.

  3. Developing valid, well-supported and logical arguments is crucial to a good argumentative essay. Each argument should help you progress clearly towards your conclusion, so that your conclusion is a logical outcome of the points made. In addition, each argument must have supporting details e.g. evidence, examples and /or reasons.

You should follow the following steps when writing a one-sided argumentative essay: • Underlineor circle thetopic and the command word • Brainstorm for ideas on the topic and generate several arguments together with supporting details for each argument • Write your essay, being careful to focus on the contentand logical organization of your arguments 4.   5. Exercise Decide whether the following essay questions require you to write a one- sided argumentative essay. Put a ‘’ if it is a one-sided argumentative essay and a ‘ X’ if it is not. • Write an essay entitled ‘Poverty in the world’. Give reasons for the problems of poverty, and suggest various ways in which governments and charities can help poor people.
