  7. Have you ever…. • Had a first job? • Switched jobs or careers? • Had a first day of training in a new position?

  8. Do you remember…. • Some of the feelings associated with you first days on a new job or in a new setting? • Did you feel… • Nervous? • Fearful? • Awkward? • Inept? • Confused? • Frustrated? • Like you wanted to give up and run away?

  9. Goals of the Work Study Component: • Seniors learn to communicate with hearing employers, coworkers, and customers.

  10. Goals of the Work Study Component: • An EXCEL 1000 job coach helps seniors at the work site to learn job duties and expand job related skills.

  17. Goals of ExCEL Academic Component: • ExCEL seniors are encouraged to apply classroom learning and content to work experience and to the world in general… • Seniors receive a full-year of math, a full year of English and a full year of health • Most seniors receive two half-credits (one per semester) for classes in their subject major or career cluster concentration.

  18. Course Content: • Is rigorous • Is presented with a focus on contemporary and pertinent issues and concerns facing our students • Is relevant • Is individualized and tailored to meet each student’s unique needs, goals and post-secondary planning • Adapts to students changing needs

  19. Test-Prep English Class This class was developed and designed to meet the needs of seniors who are contemplating a post-secondary educational program (ie. community college, four-year college, certificate program, training program etc.) Students are practicing how to read for information, identifying a main idea, analyzing characters as well as developing their vocabulary.

  20. Practical English & Math Classes • Content is chosen and aligned with post-secondary plans that include a transition into the workplace and independent living.

  21. Students work cooperatively to master vocabulary related to credit cards and budgeting money.

  22. Capital Community College English Classes • Partnership between ASD & Northwestern Connecticut Community College : • Classes held at Capital Community College in Hartford • Entrance / Placement Exam • Three levels of English and Reading • Benefits: • Exposure to college environment • Potential to earn credits • Support of ASD staff and English department

  23. Social, Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Goals of ExCEL 1000 • ExCEL 1000 seniors become increasingly aware of and involved in their own post-secondary planning.

  24. The End Result: • A student who… • Is more self-aware. • More willing to be involved in their own present and future. • Is capable of self-determination and self-advocacy. • Challenges and questions the world, rather than simply complying with it. • Accepts willingly the responsibility of shaping their own destiny • Feels the pride of owning their future

  25. What type of students are most likely able to benefit from the ExCEL 1000 program? • Students who are not candidates for a 4-year college • Students who show a strong interest in a career path which does not require a traditional 4-yr degree. • Students who are motivated to learn the skills necessary for employment and who are willing to seek out opportunities in employment fields in which they have interests.

  26. Case Study…A Teacher’s Perspective • Aga entered the ExCEL 1000 program as a senior in the Fall of 2007. Aga reported that she was interested in pursuing a career working with animals. She was also contemplating enrollment into a certificate program for veterinary technicians at a local community college after graduation. • As a result of her interest survey and post-secondary plans, Aga was placed at a bird and animal hospital in a nearby community for her WSP (Work Study Placement).

  27. Up until her senior year, Aga had not taken an active role in her own education. She was complacent and willing to have others make educational decisions for her. • When first introduced to the concept of WSP and the ExCEL coursework associated with her program, Aga became much less passive and began to question and accept adult responsibilities for decision-making in her own educational program.

  28. The Result: • Aga has been offered a paying position in the animal hospital in which she is completing her WSP. • She is in the process of completing her application to community college. • Aga has started her post-secondary planning for her living, transportation and employment/financial situation. She has made contact with appropriate agencies and is taking part in conversations about her future.

  29. Evolution of self awareness and it’s impact on life choices

  30. Are ExCEL 1000 seniors a homogeneous population? • NO! • Our seniors display a wide array of skills, talents, interests, levels of motivation and future goals. • Some of our students are almost completely self-guided: Some require constant support and guidance. Most lie on a continuum in between.

  31. Curriculum (Math, English, Health): • Test-Prep Classes • Designed for students seeking to enter a post-secondary program involving an academic component • Ie. community college, certificate or training program requiring a placement exam • Practical Classes • Designed for students whose goals involve primarily work • Course content includes teaching about credit cards, banking, checking/savings/investment accounts, writing resumes/cover letters etc. Health topics integrate course content with current health issues, crises and movements. • Basic Skills Classes • Applying English and math skills to independent living and relating it to the workplace

  32. Thank you for your attention! • Questions? • Comments?
