  2. The issue • Environmental health and pollution prevention has become • a critical issue in American healthcare • Questions have arisen about the long-term effects of certain products containing mercury, phthalates, and other potential hazards identified by the EPA

  3. A call to action • June 24, 1998: Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between EPA and AHA to address pollution prevention in health care • Goals • eliminate hazardous materials in waste, including mercury and other toxic chemicals • minimize the volume of waste • H2E - Hospitals for a Healthy Environment initiative launched to implement these goals

What is H2E? • Joint project of the AHA, EPA, Healthcare Without Harm, and the American Nurses Association • An industry wide collaborative effort to assist hospitals in eliminating mercury and reducing waste and other hazardous and toxic materials in waste. • Voluntary program designed to help hospitals enhance workplace safety and promote environmentally friendly practices • H2E exists to educate healthcare professionals about pollution prevention opportunities in hospitals and healthcare systems

  8. Significance of award • Premier only group purchasing organization in U.S. to receive the prestigious award • Recognized as playing a pivotal role in “greening” the healthcare industry • Promotes Premier’s publicly available environmental and safety resources

  9. What is EPP? Environmentally Preferable Purchasing The act of purchasing products and services for which the environmental impacts have been considered and found to be less damaging to the environment and human health than competing products and services that serve the same purpose.

What are the goals of Premier’s EPP program? • Enhance the safety and health of patients and healthcare workers and the healthcare environment; • Support and promote efforts to reduce or eliminate products and packaging deemed harmful to the environment; and • Assist members in meeting the EPA/AHA Memorandum of Understanding goal of virtual elimination of mercury containing waste by 2005 and reducing the total volume of waste generated in healthcare by 33% by 2005 and 50% by 2010.
