  1. Basic Guide to Gasoline Vapor Recovery at the Gasoline Dispensing Facility • Gasoline vapor recovery is a control strategy to capture gasoline vapors during the transfer process. California Air Resources Board LaMar Mitchell

  2. Pipeline Refinery Marine loading Terminal Gasoline Pathways(Transfer Points) California Air Resources Board LaMar Mitchell

  3. Gasoline Pathways(Transfer Points) California Air Resources Board LaMar Mitchell

  4. Working Definition • Phase I vapor recovery is a control strategy that captures and contains the gasoline vapors during the transfer of gasoline from the truck to the underground storage tank (UST). • Phase II vapor recovery is a control strategy that captures and contains the gasoline vapors when a vehicle is being fueled. California Air Resources Board LaMar Mitchell

  5. VAPOR RECOVERY PROGRAM PHASE I AND PHASE II VAPOR RECOVERY SYSTEMS VAPORS TO TANK VAPORS TO TRUCK FUEL TO TANK FUEL TO CAR PHASE II VAPOR RECOVERY PHASE I VAPOR RECOVERY

  6. Why do we care about reclaiming the vapors? California Air Resources Board LaMar Mitchell

  7. Health Agriculture Ecosystems/ Natural Resources Materials Aesthetics Air Pollution Impacts…. California Air Resources Board LaMar Mitchell

  8. Vapor Recovery Benefits • 16 billion gallons/year CA gasoline sales • Uncontrolled emissions of 8.4 lbs of gasoline vapor for each 1000 gallons gasoline transferred (truck to UST/UST to vehicle) • 372 tons/day of uncontrolled vapor emissions Total Benefit: 372 tons/day or 120,000 gallons liquid gas/day or $348,000 savings/day ($2.90/gal) California Air Resources Board LaMar Mitchell

  9. Two Types of Vapor Recovery • Vehicle Based • Dispenser Based Phase II Vapor Recovery California Air Resources Board LaMar Mitchell

  10. Vehicle Based Vapor Recovery • Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR) provides for collection of the refueling vapors in a carbon canister on the vehicle • Vapors not available to be returned to the underground storage tank • It performs the same function as the Dispenser Based vapor recovery system. California Air Resources Board LaMar Mitchell

  11. Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery or “ORVR” As fuel enters the vehicle tank, vapors are pushed to the onboard canister California Air Resources Board LaMar Mitchell

  12. Dispenser Based Vapor Recovery • Phase II vapor recovery is designed to maximize collection of vapors during vehicle fueling and contain the vapors in the facility underground storage tank. • Phase II vapor recovery routes the vapors displaced from fueling vehicles back into the underground storage tank. California Air Resources Board LaMar Mitchell

  13. Phase II Types • Balance Type • Works on the principle of Mass Transfer • 10 gallons of liquid gasoline into your vehicle tank forces 10 gallons of vapor back to the underground storage tank. • Vacuum Assist • Utilizes a vacuum pump in the system to assist the vapor to return from the vehicle tank to the underground storage tank. California Air Resources Board LaMar Mitchell

  14. Two Phase II System Types Balance Vapor Pump Assist California Air Resources Board LaMar Mitchell
