    2. Agenda What is Science Olympiad? Expectations Signing up for SO Parents: We need your help!! 2

    3. 3 What is the Science Olympiad? Annual science competition 23 different events of 50 minutes each Compete against other SD middle schools at SO Regional Competition in Feb. Run like a sports competition, only with science CVMS has had GREAT past performance 2007: 1st place at Regionals 2010, 2011: 2nd place at both Regionals/State

    4. SO at CVMS Very popular Competition limits us to 6 teams (90 students) This year will not be first come, first serve Final teams will not be chosen until December This aligns us with other top-performing schools Team choice criteria Coach assessment of performance Participation and attendance Focus and teamwork Seniority and parent coaching Top performers at Regionals will go to State 4

    5. 5 SO Student Requirements Weekly Training ? Oct Feb Plan to spend at least 6-8 hours per week Attendance/focus at all trainings is a must Team event others rely on your participation Completion of work assigned by coach(es) Adherence to CVMS rules Prior subject knowledge is NOT required but willingness to learn is

    6. 6 SO Events 23 events for this year Life, Personal & Social Science Earth and Space Science Physical Science & Chemistry Technology & Engineering Inquiry & Nature of Science Some building, some testing, some a little of both. Check the Regional SO website for event info www.sandiegoso.org

    7. 7 SO Coach Coach 12-20 students on one event Fine to learn the event along with the students How to best help Contact cvms.so.2012@gmail.com for list of remaining open events List as many open slots as you can reasonably accommodate Give us more than one event youre willing to coach

    8. Events still needing coaches Awesome Aquifer Bottle Rocket Forestry Meteorology Mission Possible Mousetrap Vehicle Towers If no lead coach is found for these events, parents of students assigned to these events will need to come together to decide how to coach 8

    9. Science Olympiad Code of Conduct Respect Show up for meetings on time and ready to work Listen to your coaches, focus on learning If you have to miss a meeting, let your coach and partner know! SO is not an individual event Your partner gets the same score as you do, TRY YOUR BEST Your team relies on you to carry your event, TRY YOUR BEST. 9

    16. Signing Up This years application has 4 parts Paper form (at SO link on cvmsptsa.com) Turn in to office by Tuesday Sept. 20 Online form (at SO link on cvmsptsa.com) Complete by Tuesday Sept. 20 Suggested donation ($125 to CVMS PTSA) Turn in with paper application Practice science test Friday Sept. 23rd at lunch/PAW time Check email on Sept. 22 for more details 16

    17. Application - Availability Students must participate in 3 or 4 events Coaching sessions are once per week for each event Usually 1 - 2 hours - at coachs discretion Usually at coachs home but CVMS has also offered space this year Students must be available at event practice time The more open slots for practice that you list, the more options you will have for events If you only have a few time slots available, maybe only your last choice events practice in the few open time slots you listed If insufficient time slots are listed, you may not be able to participate in SO due to the logistical impossibilities of assigning you to enough events 17

    18. 18 Program Contribution Science Olympiad is funded through participants CVMS SO gets no direct financial support from the school Money is used for Reusable and/or common materials (e.g. books, maps, fossils, chemicals, etc.) Copying and printing Office supplies T-shirts awards Competition day food Competition registration fees Building events may require additional funds from participants of those events (e.g. airplane kit)

    19. How are events assigned Schedules chosen to maximize student choices under these constraints: Must evenly cover all 23 events No conflicting test times on competition day No conflicting practice times There is no perfect solution to this scheduling problem Some element of luck and good fortune comes into play In December, there may be some minimal event assignment changes 19

    20. Why I didnt get my event choices Student was not available at the event practice time. Event practice times are chosen based on coach availability, competition schedule, conflicts with other events Some of your event choices test at the same time on competition day For example, at 10AM on competition day, both Cant Judge a Powder and Dynamic Planet tests are given. One person could not do both of these events. Some of your event choices practice at the same time Suppose Food Science and Compute This both practice on Saturday late afternoon. One person cant go to both practices. Student participation must be evenly spread among events. Other members of your team may have listed the event higher on their lists. This is a reason why you might get an event you didnt ask for. 20

    21. 21 Parent Volunteers Cant do it without YOU Lead coaches (or assistants)this is our most urgent need!! Please consider volunteering!! Competition day coordinator Publicity manager Practice test proctors (Sept. 23rd at lunchtime) Lunch time meeting assistants T-shirt coordinator Relax and enjoy it! - Its rewarding and fun
