MAYDAY and the RIC operations What is a Mayday The Mayday is used to signal a life-threatening emergency by many groups, such as pilots (marine and air), police and fire personnel, and transportation organizations. The call is always given three times in a row. Mayday, Mayday, Mayday !!! This prevents mistaking it for some similar-sounding phrase under noisy conditions. TheMaydaysets the RIC in operation.

  4. Reasons To Call A Mayday The following transmission given after the Mayday should be of the utmost importance to the RIC team members. It will define the type of rescue you are about to embark on and the type of equipment you may need to perform the rescue. Trapped / Caught Lost / Disoriented Fall through roof / floor / down stairs Loss of SCBA air Caught in a flashover Caught in a back draft Rapid fire expansion Explosion Collapse Cardiac Emergency Your partner collapses Equipment malfunction Tangled, stuck or pinned and can not free yourself quickly Lost or disorientated and you can not find the exit door or window

RIC, listen to the Mayday information LUNAR L– Location U– Unit N– Name A –Air (you and partner) R – Resources (What do I need to help me) WWW Who – Name & Unit Where – Location What - Resources (What do I need to help me) Mayday communications are extremely important for the RIC to process before deployment. Where you will begin searching for the downed fire fighter and what equipment you will need are all conveyed via the Mayday. Pay Attention

  7. RIC Deployment With the call of a Mayday the RIC will start a rescue operation. Scene size up should have already been completed. Structural identification should have been documented or mentally observed: (Construction type, Occupancy, Fire location & extent, smoke conditions, life hazards. ) Team leaders should have been selected. RIC members should have tried to ascertain who is working in what section of the structure and their assessments.
