  1. Advanced Chemistry II Meeting May 12, 2011

  2. Who is Mr. Cann? First year teaching at GCHS. Taught two years at Doss HS in Louisville, KY (chemistry (regular, honors, advanced) and integrated physics) Taught one year at U of Louisville: Analytical Chemistry; Lab Instructor another year. Worked for 6 months at Louisville Water Company analyzing water samples. Email: justin.cann@grant.kyschools.us

  3. Advanced Chem II This course will have an AP focus, although not an official AP class (next year) and students will not take the AP test (might be able to take CLEP test for college credit). This course will focus on first two years of college chemistry material. Heavy emphasis on laboratory work and independent learning. Highly engaging and rigorous. At times will be heavy on labs and at times heavy on notes.

  4. What you should already know… Basics of measurement, especially lab equipment (balance, thermometers, graduated cylinders) High level mathematics (at least pre-cal) Basics of chemistry (bonding, reactions, stoichiometry, nomenclature, atomic structures, etc.) Note taking, study skills, work ethics, proper behavior for advanced courses.

  5. What you will be learning… Advance lab techniques and experimentation Advance data analysis and calculations Chemical reactions and stoichiometry Organic Chemistry (biology and chemistry) Analytical Chemistry (Acid/Base reactions, data) Physical Chemistry (Gas laws, thermodynamics)

  6. How will I get ready for this advanced class… • Visit teacher website for summer work. This work is to be completed by the first day of class. http://www.teacherweb.com/KY/DossHS/JustinCann (old teacher website- if having problems, email or visit me) • Buy materials and supplies ahead of time… • Goggles/Safety Glasses (Provided, but you will probably prefer your own) • Binder (2 inches minimal) • 2 Composition Notebooks • Advanced Calculator (no graphing calculator needed)
