First known laws protecting animals • Rene Descartes influenced the idea and attitudes toward protecting and treating animals right. • Proposed and passed by 1635 in Ireland by Richard Ryder • Referring to “the cruelty of beasts.” • Prohibited the pulling of wool off of sheep • Prohibited attaching ploughs to horses’ tails Back to timeline

  3. Animal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) • Founded by Henry Bergh in 1866 • The first animal protection group in the United States • After Bergh was appointed by Abraham Lincoln as the diplomatic post in Russia, he was disgusting by the treatment of animals there. • Created a “Declaration of the Rights of Animals.” • Spoke out against bullfights, cockfights, and the beating of horses Back to timeline

  4. Enforces Anti-cruelty Legislation • Later in 1866, persuaded New York state legislature to allow the ASPCA the authority to enforce this anti-cruelty legislation towards animals. Back to timeline

  5. Laboratory Animal Welfare Act of 1966 • Signed into law in 1966 • Only Federal law in the United States that can regulate the treatment of animals in regards to research, exhibition, transport, and by dealers. • Designed to slow or hault the mistreatment and stealing of dogs and cats for experimental research purposes • Response to an article published about the mistreatment of animals in Life magazine • In 1970, amended to include many more warm-blooded animals that are intended for research purposes. • States detailed minimum standards and specific concerns.   6. 1984 Boycotting the Ringling Brothers • ASPCA boycotted the Ringling Brothers after they tried to pass goats off as unicorns by surgically inserting horns into their skulls. Back to timeline

  7. Ocean animals’ Protection • In 1988, it became illegal for any ship to dump its plastic trash in U.S. oceans or navigable waters to protect marine wildlife from getting entangled, caught, and strangled in the plastic. Back to timeline

  8. Revlon agrees • Agrees to not test their products on animals because it is potentially harmful. • Contributes large donations to find alternative ways to test products other than on animals. Back to timeline

  9. Fur Law Passes • Passed in 1995 • All countries exporting or importing fur to Europe must adopt international humane trapping standards or either ban leg hold traps. Back to timeline
