  1. Open Access at the AIP Tim Ingoldsby ASIDIC Spring 2008 Las Vegas

  2. Three Points • AIP position regarding open access • AIP experiments with open access • Debunking the arXiv.org and physics “urban legend”

  3. AIP’s Position • Open access is a business model that deserves consideration • Free access to research is an idea that has merit • But open access needs to prove that it can succeed without harming the research process • Unfunded mandates are no way to achieve open access in a sustainable way

  4. AIP Experiments with OA • Hybrid journals: AIP’s Author Select • Offered for every AIP journal • Authors pay article charge ($1,500/$1,800) to make their article freely available at time of publication • AIP reduces subscription price proportionally to % of OA articles in prior year. • Fully open access journals: AIP Access X-Press series journal, Biomicrofluidics • Financed by article charges ($600/$900) • Supplemented by advertising revenue

  5. How Author Select Articles Appear in Table of Contents Listings: Generation of nanoparticle colloids by picosecond and femtosecond laser ablations in liquid flow Stephan Barcikowski, Ana Menéndez-Manjón, Boris Chichkov, Marijus Brikas, and Gediminas RačiukaitisAppl. Phys. Lett. 91, 083113 (2007) (3 pages) Abstract    Full Text: [ HTMLSectioned HTMLPDF (402 kB)  GZipped PS   ]    Author Select - Free Access

  6. AS Results To Date • Started very slowly • Uptake was mostly from U.S. authors (40), but now EU15 is growing (24) • 14 papers from Japan • 7 papers from Korea • 4 papers from China • 1 paper from India • 2 out of every 3 that express initial interest fail to follow through with payment • U.S. articles come from Academe (50%), Gov’t Labs (40%) and Corporations (10%)

  7. Measures of Success • Author Select • Author Select articles represented less than 0.2% of 2006 articles and 0.25% for 2007 • But AIP did, as promised, reduce one title’s subscription price (by $5) for 2007 due to AS revenue and a few titles for 2008 • Biomicrofluidics • 22 articles in 1st year • Some critical acclaim (media interest in article topics)

  8. Debunking Myths About arXiv.org In physics, for example, where nearly 100% of new articles are freely available from birth in the arXiv.org open-access repository, subscription-based journals have continued to thrive. _Office of Scholarly Communication, University of California

  9. Facts Regarding arXiv.org • Less than 9% of 2005 - 2007 articles published in AIP journals appear in the arXiv • For APS journals, the percentages vary • Physical Review Letters: 37.9% • Physical Review D (Particles & Fields): 66.9% • Physical Review B (Cond. Matter): (TBD)%

  10. More Facts • Those journals having the most articles from the arXiv have the least downloads per article (APS, IOP, AIP) • Low downloads = higher cost per use • Will librarians cancel such titles? • Many studies indicate that repositories will become an important factor in cancellation decisions (More to come as our research project continues) Thanks to Bob Kelly (APS) and Joe Tennant and Andy Wray (IOPP)
