  1. MTE Conclusions for 2011 • Dummy septum studies • Hybrid MTE • Observation of islands at 2 GeV • Observations of field stability Acknowledgements: M. Buzio, OP-PS crew, R. Steerenberg S. Gilardoni, M. Giovannozzi, C. Hernalsteens, A. Lachaize, B. Vandorpe MG - IEFC meeting

  2. Milestones (from IEFC 21/10/11) • End of 2011 • Studies and measurements to confirm feasibility of dummy septum solution (ABP/OP/TE-ABT). • Studies almost complete. • Measurements: time lost for failure of SMH42. Encouraging results obtained with ions. Completions of measurements in March/April (agreed with ABT experts). • Prototype magnetic measurements of high-order multipoles of PS main magnets (ABP/TE-MSC). • Hardware ready. • No possibility to find suitable time slot during POPS test at end of 2011. Re-scheduled during hardware tests period in 2012. • Preliminary beam tests of hybrid MTE (ABP/OP): • Done • Additional work done: • Observation of islands at 2 GeV • Observation of field stability MG - IEFC meeting

  3. Milestones (from IEFC 21/10/11) • Q1 2012: • Finalisation of studies of hybrid MTE (ABP) • Q2 2012: • Finalisation beam studies of hybrid MTE • Conclusions from fluctuations studies (hopefully) NB: to continue the tests even after the failure of SMH42, ions were used. Several users were set-up with ions (e.g., a clone of TOF) thanks to the efforts of the OP-PS crew. MG - IEFC meeting

  4. Dummy septum studies - I • To make transverse space for the blade of the dummy septum in SS15 • Move outwards the MTE beam (light blue) • Move inwards the TOF beam (green) Modified fast bump Isl. Slow bump Nominal TOF MG - IEFC meeting

  5. Dummy septum studies - II • Strategy to reduce amplitude at SS15 • Reduce slow bump in SS15 • Optimise strength of extraction kicker KFA71 • It turned out that KFA4 (used for MTE – extraction of fifth turn) was useful in gaining transverse space in SS15 while reducing amplitude in SS09 (where losses were observed with protons). Without KFA4 SS09 With KFA4 With KFA4 SS15 Without KFA4 MG - IEFC meeting

  6. Dummy septum studies - III 3.6 mm gain RMS: 0.5 mm (KFA71) and 1.5 mm (KFA71 and 04) With KFA4 Without KFA4 SS15 MG - IEFC meeting

  7. Dummy septum studies - IV • Main results: • Space gained ≈ 7 mm • Measurements to be repeated with protons to increase statistics and check losses Modified fast bump for MTE Dummy septum Improved TOF MG - IEFC meeting

  8. Hybrid MTE - I • Tests performed: • Slow bump: combine bumps in SS16 and SS31 Original bump 31: not closed due to magnets in series New bump perfectly closed (also from measurements) MG - IEFC meeting

  9. Hybrid MTE - II • Tests performed: • Tune control during rise of slow bump and QKEs Huge tune variation. Difficult to measure (too fast for standard tools). Partial correction using F8L. Potential issues: Tune change in vertical plane. Correct response of the circuit. MG - IEFC meeting

  10. Hybrid MTE - III No tune correction • Tests performed: • Kicked beam into island • Fast tune change induces fast islands’ movement. The beam kicked inside does not follow and filaments Best tune correction Accurate measurement and correction of fast tune change are the top priority for 2012 tests. MG - IEFC meeting

  11. Observation of islands at 2 GeV - I • Proposed to probe trapping reproducibility for very different conditions with respect to nominal (below transition). • Found islands in V-plane! • Linear coupling is responsible for this unexpected behaviour. H-plane V-plane MG - IEFC meeting

  12. Observation of islands at 2 GeV - II • Campaign of coupling measurement launched. • Different energies probed from ions injection to 14 GeV. • Data analysis is in progress. • NB: coupling at injection is used to control instabilities for LHC beam. 2 GeV Preliminary MG - IEFC meeting

  13. Observations of field stability - I • These measurements are a complement of measurement of islands’ position vs. time. • They provide additional insight of B-field components stability. 2010 measurement campaign by B. Vandorpe B = 12650 G B = 7000 G MG - IEFC meeting

  14. Observations of field stability - II B = 6666 G B = 6666 G 2011 measurement campaign by B. Vandorpe MG - IEFC meeting

  15. Observations of field stability - III • Direct magnetic measurements will provide more insight in the behaviour of the PS main magnets (planned for hardware test period). • Large amount of data available for analysis and discussion with various experts: it would be worthwhile organising a half-day discussion (as proposed by R. Steerenberg) in January/February. MG - IEFC meeting
